Where to start with a stock 305

Id like to start modding for performance, but Im on a limited budget, i'll be able to throw out a few hundred every couple week but I don't know where to start, whats going to help best, and not having to burn a new prom till wayy later.

Any suggestions?

I would always suggest to start with exhaust. Hedders, 3 inch catback and muffler. Thats a very noticeable gain.

First thing should be an open element, cause it's cheap and it's a good mod. You can also do the ultimate TBI mods which are also free. After that I would do exhuast.

Well when i first got my car i did a full tune up ( start of with taking of the emissions , fuel filter, open element , spark plug wires , o2 sensor , new oil , oil filter , do the ultamite tbi mods and at the same time clean the iac valve). under drive puleys, mostly a really good mod is exhaust.

What i would do is full tuneup like mentioned...
But then work on chassis/suspension. Subframe connectors, LCA's and relocation brackets, struts, springs.

Then start building a 350 or larger. Youll find a built 305 is still slow... yea i know some guys are running mid 13's, which isnt fast IMHO.
Jus do things that will swap over to a 350.

you can make better power and equal if not better gas milage with a 350 (unless you ditch FI)

Since appearently everybody is going to ignore the sticky thread at the top of the tbi board.....I'll throw in my $.02

Since you have already stated that custom tuning is a way down the road for you, and budget is limited (I hear ya ), then a good starting point would be: Open element, Ultimate tbi mods, tune-up, advancxe base timing, exhaust, underdrive crank pulley, and posi rear w/ steeper gearing, and ignition. Remember, if you plan on an engine swap down the road, save time and money, and build around it.

I have an open element allready. I plan on this being a daily driver (for the summer months) but i ALSO WANT IT TO BE FAST. It is pretty fast as it is but Id just like to get the most out of what I have for now. Yes eventually I will probably want to stick a 350, or 383 in it. But the 305 runs good and has alot of life left, no sense in takin it out yet.

Well if you are planning on doing that good mods for now,and still are going to be good for that 350 or 383 are:

*headers
*under drive pulleys
*distributer/wires pulley/coil/(ignition)
*manifold

And if you dont mined spending some money for now get a chip, i got mine from (tbichips.com). It allaws you to delete govenor , And take of all your emisions (smog pump, cat, egr) with no check engine light coming on.

Thats what i would do if i were you.

Well the under drive pulley is the pulley that is located all the way at the bottom of the serpentine belt. The under drive is connected to the harmolic balancer and then to the crank. the reson of doing this mod to your car is becouse the new under drive (march is a brand) they are smaller and will let your engine rev faster. My buddy got 10 rwhp at the dino becouse of the pulley.

I hate to burst your bubble, but a 305 TBI with just an open element is generally not considered a fast car, and especially not with 2.73's

All that matters is that he is pleased with it.

As far as underdrive pulleys go: they make your accessories turn slower throughout the rpm band. thus redusing "drag" on the engine allowing more power to make it to the ground. That is why I only recommend the crank pulley. when I had the alternator underdrive on the, it died soon after. And I've never thought slowing down the water pump was a good idea, and have never used one on it. The crank underdrive already slows everything down, the others will slow down that particular accessory even more.
