383
hey hows it going? one of my buddys is building a low compression full roller 383 and he wants to use a car to brake it in, which will most likely be mine. i have a lo3 right now runnin on a hypertech thermomaster chip.... with its calibration, could i run his engine without any tuning? im not trying to tune a chip for power out of this engine, just to break it in. will it run okay with this chip? i might end up buying the engine after break in, then tune the chip, get a better tbi, so on.....ect. i just want to know if it will run okay with this tuning for at least 3000 miles.

If I were you, I would want to break it in with a carb on top of it. You'll ruin that motor trying to break it in with a stock TBI and that sh*tty chip. You'll choke it on air and it won't get nearly enough fuel; I think it would just be bad news without chip burning.
I say break it in with a carb. Learn to tune chips, throw a Holley 670 TBI back on it after break-in and tune it up right.

All I did was TPI heads, an L98 cam and headers and I having some pretty major tuning issues. I can't imagine what the tuning would be like with a 383 and a big fat cam!!!!

I second breaking it in with a non-cc carb setup. Not too sure it's worth going through the PROM burning and tuning process, unless, of course, he funds it in which case, it's up to him.

this represents a dilema. not many of us were able to break in a brand new motor in a car that does not have a prior good tune. i would expect the tune would need to be close. not too lean not too rich. each i assume would hurt the break in. here is where an experienced tuner could be of help. some of us (ben73) run a 383 TBI. that person could help you with the basic tune but still i would think a hands on tuner would be better. tuning is trial and error. no room for error in a break in. IMO. seems a WB would be a BIG help. i think the carb idea needs some consideration however that in itself complicates things but would most likely result in a better break in process. carb tuners can get it right quickly. IMO.
