I was just wondering if this is alright to have the IAT sensor mounted in the open element base like this. I drilled a hole in it just big enough for the sensor but it is not an air tight fit...does this have to be an air tight fit?

 

Second look from inside...the duct tape is just covering the hole for the pcv.

 

You are fine. The open element itself is not air tight either.

 

Yeah, as long as you know it wont come out and its not going to hit any heat sources you are fine. Shoot, I've seen in so many diff. occasions where the gasket between the gold spacer ring and the TB is FRIED, which really is no biggie...
