Sorry, intake question
For this who have swapped intakes, how in the #^*^%$!!! did you get the bolts on the back of the intake off? For example the 1 holding the throttle linkage bracket thing and the one next to it. I can hardly get a wrench on them, much less have enough room to get them off. This is really frustrating and I keep stepping away, getting frustrated again over and over. Any brilliant advice will probably save my car from destruction...

I must be thinking of a different part than you, how would you use a u joint with a ratchet? And don't extensions give you less torque?

As long as teh angle isnt really accute when your using a u-joint you wont loose any torque. The extention just allows the ratchet to be farther away so you can turn it. Basically it was socket (and maybe the u-joint), extention, and then the ratchet. Some things just work better then others so try all your tools.

First thing, try to calm down, you can do a lot of damage to things when you get angry
Second, when I swapped my intake, I took everything off I could that was in the way of the back bolts that hold the throttle bracket and EGR selonoid. So first, remove the plug wires, distributor cap, and coil. Then disconnect the throttle cables and set them out of the way. Now, you should be able to fit a ratchet with an extension on the bolts holding the bracket down. Now, take the same approach to the other side that is holding the EGR selonoid bracket. Make sure you lablel all hoses and bolts and brackets...LABEL EVERYTHING to make an easier time putting it all back together. Good Luck!

I always know when to step away when I feel like smashing something with a hammer, I've stepped away from this project many times already. I'm gonna try to find a way to remove more things around it to give me more room and I just went to Sears to increase my arsenal a bit. Well here goes nothing...wish me luck.

If you havnt already, take out the dist. Youll never get anything out with that there. Without the dist., you could have more room to work.

Distributor is out, along with everything else except for one large bolt thing in the back left with a hose coming out of it. Can't get it to budge, aside from that there is nothing keeping the intake on. Should be off tomorrow and then I can start trying to get everything back on and hope that I can get her to run...

That sounds like the heater hose fitting. That things a major pain to get off. Leave that for after you get the intake off.

It sure is being stubborn...I saw some red on the threads, is that some kind of loc-tite? I know blue is medium stregnth so I thought maybe red was either weaker or stronger. I really hope its not ultra stregnth...

I've got a 1' extension and a 4" extension, threw em' together, and it was a sinch to get em' off. No elbow necessary.

The fitting you are talking about is the in fact the heater hose fitting. That is a biotch to get out, you need to go find the correct 1/2" socket that fits it (I forget exactly what size) and either have somebody hold the manifold or you stand on it while you torque that thing out with a 1/2" ratchet. I did that and then bought a chrome fitting from pepboys. Good Luck!

Well I got the intake off, which was interesting cause there was a bolt we didn't notice so me and my friend sat there wondering why it was being so stubborn
Then when we pulled it off some coolant from the intake kinda spilled onto my engine. Will this have any horrific effects on my car? We put on the gaskets and rtv and rested the TBI on top of it and called it a day. Gonna buy some new bolts tomorrow cause the ones we pulled aren't looking too nice.

We did clean it up with some paper towels, and I plan on changing the oil as soon as I finish getting everything hooked up. Aside from that things are going fairly well, slow, but well...

i just blew the engine in my truck and am in the process of switching engines from a donor truck i purchased to my truck ...LOL

When putting the bolts back in, is it absolutely necessary to get each bolt in the same hole? If so I have a problem since all of my marking managed to get rubbed off. I was thinking I should just go to sears and put on some new bolts with some kind of teflon thread sealer.

doesnt matter the order unless one has a stud on it or something to mount a bracket too ....
i just throw a little silicone (form-a-gasket) on the end of each bolt before i thread it in ...
