tps connector ,bad idle?
hey guys,i`ve been a member for awhile but this is my first post so here goes.i`ve got a 88 lo3 camaro with a crappy idle.i know i`ll get a "do a search"but i`ve done that but i can`t seem to find exactly what i`m looking for.
the following mods are as follows,a/c delete, heater valve delete.tpi "ram air"C.A.I, A.I.R delete. i`ve got pics if you`d like to see.
well the car runs like crap when it`s cold.i start it up and it runs like i`m missing a cylinder or something until it warms up. i`ve watch my injectors as they are firing and one thing that i have noticed is that sometimes they will spit and sputter.they make kinda like a poofing sound when they do.like it`s just air coming through.my idle after it warms up jumps up and down from 500 to 700 rpms consitantly.when i`m driving at about 70 or 80 the engine surges, not all the time but it happens. i don`t know what else to do ,i don`t have any scanning equipment or anything so i can`t check that way.any advise would be greatly appreciated.as far as the tps connector i noticed that the plastic around the 3 metal prongs are falling apart.they have broken off at the base of the green rubber"bushing".i can still plug it in but i don`t know if this is the main problem.please help thanx

do you feel a loss of power? my problem started exactly the same way, and it has quickly escalated to surging through the whole rpm band, and has no power. idles horrible, and dies most of the time. i can only drive it after it warms up. i checked my fuel pressure yesterday and the pressure is extremly low. at idle my pressure is anywhere from 3 to 7 psi. when driving to jumps between 5 and 9 psi. i have an lo3 as well and we should be running a sustained pressure between 9 and 13 psi. im in the process of replacing my fuel pump, but its difficult when its raining so.... anyways, watch it close, im not saying this is your problem, but i had the same symptoms about a week and a half ago.

i don`t really feel a loss of power per say, but i don`t know it`s done this for a awhile.i`ve had the car for a little over a year and it`s just been getting worse over time

well, since we don't have a shraider valve, you can ether tap into the line under the hood where the soft line connects to the hard line to the tbi. i didn't have an adaptor for this, i did however have one that hooks in where your fuel filter is located, by removing the fuel filter and placing a T fitting in its pace containing a pressure check valve. you might not have access to this. you could probably take it to a shop and have them check it, it shouldn't cost but about 10 or 15 dollars.

youve most likly thrown 23 just from disconnecting your tps. as from 45.. did you say replaced your o2? with these codes, i don't think having it scanned will accomplish much. have you checked all of your plugs?

dealer ,but you would have to swap your pins over to the new connector houseing, or you can go to a junk yard and find a good one and slice it in,what wires where arching ,plug wires? if so you need to get another set ,but if you say you have fried 2 map sensors already i;m figureing your ecm has crapped out on you. also if you plan on doing anything with this tbi system it would be wise to get one of these to monitor your feul pressure

well i haven`t fried 2 maps just one and yeah my plug wires were arching.i just don`t know when i drove to work this morning the car really ran like crap.ran another code 45.i` tried to take here in for a diaganostic(spelling?) today but the were to busy so monday i should find out what is trully wrong , thanx for the input guys keep `em coming
When you find out the problem, post it up. Because I have this same problem on my new motor (350 5.7) in my truck, except mine does it whether it's cold or warm. Sometimes it's bad sometimes it's hardly noticable. I have searched all over trying to find a solution to this problem with no luck.

When you pull the connection of the map sensor, the car may run better because the ecm will try to richen it up.If it dies after a few min.and won't crank up,look at the injectors to see if ther is fuel coming out.If there isn't you may have a fuel pump problem.

I also got a replacement harness plug (for your broken one) from Pep Boys. They called it a different name, but the prongs and the little slits that have to line up in the TPS all matched and it worked fine. Sorry I don't remember their name for it, apparently this connector is in another place in the GM harness as well....

Fix the tps connector before going on and trying to fix other problems that might not exist. Lots of online autoparts stores will carry pigtail connectors for just about every sensor you can imagine, even sensors on new cars.
