DIY vs mail order vs stock...video
Ok, I thought this is a good thread of its own.
It came up in another thread, and instead of murking up that one, I'm going to start this one.
There has been a lot of "discussion" (I'll use that word for now) and some of it got rather heated over this issue. BMmonteSS offered to video tape his car at idle, to show the diffrence. We were chatting on AIM tonight, and both of us have some time in the next few weeks. So we are offering this out here, what do people want to see. I'll offer my car up as a test mule, and and I'm sure BM will also. I'll be willing to test just about any combo, and video tape it for people. I also have easy access to a g-tech.
This thread may get locked, it may not. If anyone has anything they want to see, and get on video, let us know. About the only thing I won't do, is actualy purchase someone elses chip for this. I'd even be willing to take the time to do a 'mail order' chip for BM's car, and compare it with his hands on tuning.
Let me know what you guys want to see, I'm sure there will be people who are interested in seeing the how thing perform in diffrent cirumstances.

My only hope is that I beat you to it. I am doing some serious wrenching in the next couple of weeks and I was going to take some before and after videos of an LT1 cam swap with proper chip work as well as without it. My goal was to show the drastic difference between a 16 second ideling mess and a 14 second racer with nothing more than a chip tune.

Just to throw it out there, I've got a Hypertech chip for a 91 that I'd be more than willing to donate for someone to use in this video.

I'm going to post up my complete combo so you guys can get an idea of what amount of chip tuning is required for this type of combo.
7747 ecm (also have a 746 but haven't tried it yet)
454 TB with 70 lb/hr injectors
home made adapter/spacer
performer RPM intake
416 305 heads mild chamber work (no pocket work)
comp 4x4 cam 218 226 dur. .462 .480 lift on a 110 lobe sep
shorty headers through dual 2.5 pipes that go though a home made x-pipe and performance style turbo mufflers.
Compression worked out to 9.7 static and it cranks to 200 to 205 psi.
I'm running a 3" open element filter
edit: ohh yeah almost forgot it's a .030 over 350
All of this is pushing a 3700 with me in it car that has a 700r4 tanny and a ford 9" with 3.25 gears. It's best run to date is a 8.95 @77 mph I haven't gotten 1/4 times with it running like that, but it should be in the 13's pretty easily considering I ran a 14 flat with an 1/8 time of 9.1 before the mods that pushed me into the 8's. I also have access to a G-tech pro and I have a WB so we can keep track of the AFRs do with various bins.

My car wouldnt even idle with my previous SD chip when I put the vortecs on. It surged up and down about three or four times and died. Without the SD, it makes setting the fuel pressure with the car running really hard when I have to have the carb hat in place at all times
. I guess I could tune a new SD chip, but the current bin I have is a train wreck with the current setup.
I doubt it would even get to the point of starting with the stock chip. It would probably just flood out.

... and I have the TBIchips.com PROM from Brian in SC. All I can say about it is that I am happy with the performance difference from stock. That is the qualifier though: All stock engine, non-stock chip. If I did anything with the manifold, headers, or TB, it would not be the right thing for me.
Just sayin'.
