You do not have to emtpy the tank but it does help to pull the pump fuse and let the car burn the gas out of the lines. I just take it out and collect whatever fuel that spills out into a coffee can. If anything release the gas cap to keep the fuel from squirting in your face.

BE CAREFUL WHEN DISCONNECTING THE FUEL FILTER.like he said use a backup wrench and loosen both connections because you will want to put it back on pretty quick...take the fuel cap off to release pressure, but i have found that if you put the cap back on it will keep as much fuel from spilling because it is like using the vent on a gas can it doesnt let the air push the fuel thru the tank into lines...observe the flow arrow on the filter(arrow goes to the front)DO NOT lie directly under the filter if you are doing this on the ground....wear a pair of rubber gloves to keep as much gas off your hands(you will get some on you)but it will help a little...I had abad experience once on a camaro i had before i had any experience in changing one...(gas doesnt taste good, and it doesn't feel good in your eyes)...hope any of this helps man...

i think if i remember right its best to put the fuel side on first to give you a little more time to connect the front side too...

Check that the O-rings stay on the hard lines. On the end of each hardline there is an O-ring to seal it. Sometimes they stay in the fuel filter fitting.
Just take a quick look to be sure they are still there. If not will need to pull it out of the filter and slip it back onto the hard line.
Arrow on filter points toward the inside of the car (toward the driveshaft). That is the direction of the fuel flow.
RBob.

The fuel pump fuse is located on the passenger side of the inner fender, right in between the battery and coolant overflow reservoir in a small black connector.
thanks a bunch, after i posted that i found a thread with that info in it. just did the swap and took all of 5 minutes mostly because of the need to. Learned a few things:
*Don't think that just because the fuel pump isn't primed that the fuel won't run out. I made that mistake and spilled a decent amount of gas before getting the filter off.
*This is a job to do when the girlfriend/wife/mom is out of the house because if either had seen the mess of gas on the floor of the garage they would have killed me.
*the coffee can was a must for this and even with it i made a mess...
I had this filter sitting around for a few months now becuase i was too lazy to put it in and wasn't sure how hard of a job it would be and whether i could tackel it. But if you can change oil then you can change this. And i will say i needed it! the fuel coming out of the line before the filter was clear and this is what i got out of the old filter once it was off the car....
