Are there any aluminum heads that I can buy ans swap out for the factory heads?
I'm talking pull head off, put new head on... no mods needed (other than maybe burning a chip)
If I can get into the 13's with the 305 I have in the car, I would like to keep it in there, just so the #'s still match and it has more value 20 years from now.
Tell me what your ideas are... I was going to drop about $5k on a new motor, I'm sure if I rebuild the 305, do heads, cam, intake manifold, and bore the TB I'll get lots more power.

I THINK there was a company that recently came out with some, but most who keep the 305 go with TPI heads, S/R Torquer's or milled Vortecs.Originally posted by jimp2001

There are almost always other mods needed.Originally posted by jimp2001

Then you're probably going to want to do the cam while in there.Originally posted by jimp2001

I highly doubt it. You can buy crate 350's all day long for $2,500 that make upwards of 300hp. 305's making that kind of power N/A are few and far between for our cars and require some serious in depth chip tuning. If you've got $5K to use, buy a 350 or 383.Originally posted by jimp2001

You can use any small block head on your 305. Some require special intakes though and some aren't suited well to your 305. With slight port work your stock heads can suffice. You can make some pretty decent gains on the intake side and improve the exhaust a touch as well. You may also want to cosider some 416 (LG4) or 081 (305 TPI) heads. They too respond well to porting. I would not waste your time rebuilding the 305. It is cheaper in the long run to stick with a 350.

Your best bet is to just pull the 305 with all it's matching numbers and store it in a corner of the garage. It cost more to rebuild a 305 than it does a 350, heck a 383 is about the same price as 305. If your trully going to spend 5000$ dollars on a motor, you can build something pretty mean. You just have to keep in mind that your stock tranny probably won't survive behind a 300+ hp motor, and if you ever get that much power to hook, your rear end is gonna need attention. If planned well you can upgrade your entire drivetrain for 5000$.
Originally, I was going to buy a ZZ383 Crate motor, an LS1 rear, and rebuild the trans myself. My main concern was that a TBI manifold doesnt bolt onto the fasburn heads included with the crate ZZ383. Is it possible to use a 4bbl manifold and buy some sort of an adapter plate so I can bolt my TB to it? I would really like to stick with my original plan and leave the 305 in the garage where it belongs, but I cant find a way to make that ZZ383 work with my TBI setup

Yeah, holley makes an adapter plate for using carb manifolds with TBI. It'll make more power anyways, the Edelbrock TBI manifold doesn't do as well as the carbed manifolds, RPM Air-gap is where it's at.

Yeah, but that also won't fit under a stock hood.Originally posted by TonyC
