RPM Problem

OKAY, SO MY CAR IS STILL A LITTLE SHAKEY AFTER INSTALLING A NEW O2 SENSOR ITS STILL RUNNING RICH AND THE RPM'S ARE REALLY IRRATIC. FOR INSTANCE, I CAN DRIVE A CERTAIN SPEED, TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, AND MY CAR WILL STILL GO THE SAME SPEED. EVEN THE RPMS ARE STAYING THERE.

* SECOND PROBLEM: IT IDLES IRRATICALLY WHEN IM AT IDLE AS WELL. WHEN THE SHIFTER IS IN PARK OR WHEN IM AT A RED LIGHT. IT USUALLY IDLES AROUND 700 TO 1000 RPM BUT NOW IT'S IDLES NORMALLY FOR A WHILE, THEN STARTS TO GO ALL HAYWIRE ON ME.

IF SOMEONE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM OR KNOWS HOW TO FIX IT...PLEASE HELP!!! ITS SO EMBARASSING! IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANX!

WOULD YOU THINK TPS PROBLEM? OR IGNITION? OR JUST NEW ENGINE? ALSO...JUST RECENTLY (ABOUT 4-5 MONTHS AGO) I PUT THIS ENGINE IN W/ MY MECHANIC. WITH THAT WE GAVE IT ALL NEW TUNE UP PARTS...YEAH....I DONT KNOW WHAT'S GOIN ON.
ANYWAY, THANX IN ADVANCE FOR THE ADVICE AND INFO!

Have you checked for vacuum leaks or turning caps lock off?

I would look at the simple things first. make sure your floor mat isn't preventing your gas pedal from going all the way down. I would also make sure that your TBI unit linkage is not all gummed up keeping the throttle plates open a smidge at idle. That is a common problem with older high mileage TBI motors. A simple cleaning of the throttle spring can alleviate any problems there.

if that does not work I would look for vacuum leaks as mentioned above. How long has it been since the car had a good tune-up? I would check the timing, inspect a few plugs, and check the resistance of your plug wires.

Also, to add to what Shifty said, is this new engine you dropped in a stock engine? What are the specs on it. That could be the problem right there if it's anything but stock. When my only mods were Holley intake and headers, my car did the "drive itself" thing, it's the IAC getting thrown off.

First thing I'd look at is cleaning the IAC, sounds like what it is to me. Maybe even TPS, but either way it sounds like the IAC is staying open. Always good to check for vacuum leaks too.

Another thing to check is the cruise control. If its in the on position on the turn signal selector the module under the hood could be confused. Assuming you'r car has cruise control. But you can never go wrong with checking the timing and plug wires. Fire it up in the garage in the dark and see if there are any arching wires. Then like the others have pointed out with the car running spray some starting fluid around the intake area and see if she revs at all.

its been about 4-5 months since i tuned it up (when i dropped the motor in. also im pretty sure it was bone stock when i had it dropped in. i'll check the IAC tomorrow and let you guys know the results. does anyone here have problems w/ the TPS burning out a lot? because when i had the old motor in, it used to do that for some reason (never got a chance to see WHY it did that because the motor died on me before i had the chance). i'll also check the TPS. does anyone have an easier method of changing plugs on our motors? because its hard as hell for me to get to the plugs on the pass. side...thanx!
