Yup.
I know a guy pulling 315hp crank with a 305tbi.
But, most people here will tell you that its not possible.
So, dont get too discouraged.
Tunning, port and and valve job, full exhaust, 3:23 or 3.42 gears will get you decent performance. Dont need to bore it necesseraly.
(If you wanna get cocky, 125 shot will do the trick)

Lo-tec ran 13.6 with a 193 casting Caddy LO5 engine that also had the cam swap + exhaust.
Reasonable power can be made with stock castings. More power can be made with ported heads.

The heads would be pretty far down on my list of mods too. Way after exhaust, cam, intake, and getting a 350.
Whats up with the influx of tuned port guys lately?

Using a 350 is obviously going to get you closer to a 300hp goal. Anything beyond that will need new heads.
I dicked around with 187's before when I had a TBI car, I didnt get very far with those heads, ended up swapping for S/R 305 Torquers.

I know it is. But I was just shy of 240rwhp with the 416 heads, and the same cam. at 12% loss that is about 270 hp. Its getting closer to the 300hp mark, and I really don't have much money tied up in this, it is a pretty easy buildup.

big flow heads may not be best for street driven application. especially TBI. cheap heads may cause other issues. i happen to have a professional engine builder as an aquaintance/business relationship. the latest heads coming from Edelbrock(cnc) are perfection. in his humble opinion having set up more than a couple engines. he is a total frame off restoration specialist. now again not the highest flow(rpm) but good velocity which means easier to tune.
chev vortec is another lower cost alternative.
