Old Skewl TBI camshaft
Old Skewl TBI camshaft
I currently have a 1988 TBI 305 camaro automatic and the car is stock with the only mod of a 1969 DZ 30/30 Duntov solid lifter camshaft. The car ran a 17.3 stock and the camshaft is the only mod done. Any one ever used a cam this size in a TBI car? Im thinking its in the low 15's now, but dreaming of 14's.

Well a 17.3 run means something is not right. A properly tuned lo3 should run anywhere from 15.7- 16.5. Also you should check out the stickies before jumping into a cam swap without reasonable planning.
Our cams are hydralic roller not solid mechanical. So the cam won't slap in. Also you are dreaming way too much, because with the cam swap you suggested you are doubtful to get the car to run.
EDIT:
After getting the specs on the dz 30/30 cam, that would be one of the worst choices with a stock tbi car.
Cam Technical Notes: Basic rpm range is 4000 - 6800; and compression ratio is 11.0 - 12.5. The duration at .050 lift (intake/exhaust) is 254/254 degrees, and the valve lift is .485"/.485". Lobe centerline is 114. T

If this is a stock 305 TBI car, that would be a grossly inappropriate cam.
It will be all but impossible to get it to idle right.
It will have ABSOLUTELY ZERO leave: you'll literally be able get out and push the car harder than it will launch.
If the car ran 17s stock, it will probably go 20 to 21 with that cam as its only mod.
Yes I mean that. I've had that cam before.

no, its the RPM range thats a lil off to TBI... 4000-6800 is past the powerband. TBI makes it earlier 3000-4500. You also have to be careful with a high lift cam because if youre still using stock heads, .480" lift is coming REAL close to hitting the valve guides

and no, it will run, probably will sound really cool too, IF you get it to idle right, but you need better heads and EXTENSIVE tuning to get that setup to perform like you hope. More fuel will be needed too to keep it from running lean with that much lift too.

There hasn't been a Camaro motor that came with solid lifters since about 71.
They changed from flat-tappet hydraulic to hydraulic roller lifters in 87 in these cars.
Yes you can put a solid-lifter flat-tappet cam in a roller block. That isn't an issue.
No the cam will not run worth a crap in that setup. It is about as completely wrong a cam, a total mismatch, as you can get. In fact it probably IS the single worst GM cam you could use.
The motor will "work", but the car will not "run". It will barely crawl. It will SOUND terrific; but it will be one of those "all show no go" wonders, like the all-chrome L48s with chrome 6-71 blowers and 2 chrome carbs on them that you see at street rod shows, that don't have enough power to drive up onto their trailers.

Just like "looks better" doesn't always equal "faster".
Incidentally, I believe you when you say it sounds good; I told you it would.
I know, because I've had that cam before. I'm guessing, about the time your daddy was a gleam in your grand-daddy's eye.
Time slips please. Without those, it's all spank-off.

Until then, ..... well, let's just say, I'll believe it when I see a time slip. Make sure it shows your 60'.
i have a audio file, its really a good sounding camshaft, i put it in gear and let the tires spin on concrete but i have no idea how to post it. it idles ok @ 900 rpms how can i attach my audio file? if you hear this file, it will let you know how much i know about tunning. but anyway, i have it on putfile http://media.putfile.com/My-Duntov-3030-cammed-305 also, this isnt a joke, as you all know that tunning a tbi car with that size of camshaft takes some figuring out, so listen and tell me what you think

also, i have a buddy with a g-tech, i guess we could video tape running with the g-tech, i dont get the whole timeslip[ thing, i have timeslips from another car running mid 14's, how whould you know that that was the car i have now?

We call BS on this because a cam with 210 deg of duration will some times causes stalling and ruff idling (not in a good way). For you to run a cam with a full 44 deg more duration and say it runs fine is darn near impossible. Heck my 350 with a 218 deg cam wouldn't even start let alone idle. That cam is so far mismatched to the rest of your motor that you are most certainly going to be much slower. Sure it'll feel fast because it will pretty much fall on it's face till 4 grand and then start pulling hard just to fall on it's face again at 5 grand when the intake, heads, and exhaust all max out simultaneously. Of course this is all assuming that it would even start and run....which I'm pretty sure it won't. There are also about 10 other tuning related reasons this won't work too, but I won't go into that unless your actually tuning this combo....which I don't think you are.
Hopefully your just confused on the size cam you put in, are you sure you're looking at the .050 duration numbers and not the advertised duration numbers?

nope the specs are as they appear, go ahead and listen to my audio file, it is amazing what i have done Putfile - My Duntov 3030 cammed 305 i did tell people i was putting that cam in and with tunning cars for over 20 years, i can do it with ease i can show you my bin file for ecu i use if ud like

Alrighty then Michal, first of all that cam has no lope whats so ever. It sounds like it idles perfectly smooth. A cam that big won't idle at less than 1000 RPM and even at that is gonna have a nasty pro-stock like lope. Your sounds like a stock car with glasspacks.
What you have done is NOT AMAZING, well I take that back it is amazing how bad of an idea it is. Every single part of your engine is designed for an idle to 4500 RPM power band, that cam is designed for a 4000 rpm to 7000 RPM power band. This is a perfect example of mismatched combo if I've ever seen one.
By tuning, I assume you don't mean you burn your own chips right? That cam is so big that you would have to be very sharp, and know a heck of a lot more than 99% of the members on this board. It would also mean you would have had to have been on this board learning how to tune your chip...since this is the only place to learn that from. Judging by your post count, and the way you word your post I highly doubt that you even know where your computer is located let alone how to tune a GM computer to run well with a cam that big.
So are you sure you have a TBI system on your car and not a carburetor? TBI = 2 injectors over 2 throttle bores.

So do share with us your vast tuning knowledge....is it hypertech, or tbichips.com that you got your chip from?
By the way check out the top of this board if you want to see an example of how to properly tune a TBI motor (come in for a free tune) not that I've actually tuned a tbi vehicle or anything.

No I'm saying that I haven't seen you around here or the DIY prom board, and the biggest cam I've ever seen tuned in any GM OBD1 base vehicle was full 10 deg shorter duration.....and the person who tuned that is a very sharp indivdual that has contributed alot to the boards.
So what map value does this cam idle at? What parts of the tune did you have the most problem with? What kind of burner do you use.
I don't mean to sound rude, for all I know you could be a GM calibrations engineer with bad grammer.
P.S. My 218 226 cam idles great, and I don't need turn my motor any faster than 6000 rpm so I haven't used a bigger cam than that, even if I did I wouldn't use a cam that uses 30 year old technology.

i dunno, all i can do is tell you what ive done. i know my car and how to tune it and it DID take me like 400 burns to get it where it is now. the car does not fall on its face, the transmission i calibrated to shift @ 6000 rpms wot. the car would not run or barley started with stock tunning

Thats great, I stand corrected. Please share how you did it and enlighten the rest of us as to how you over came a lot of the inherent problems with TBI.
You could start by letting us know what your complete combo is. Just droping in with less than 20 post to your name and saying hey ya'll I put the biggest nasties cam I could find in my stock LO3 and it runs GREAT, tends to lift a few eyebrows around here. Then when people start asking questions you don't give any more info or even track times when you say you went to the track it even further discredits you. I'll give you the benefit of a doubt and say this was all just a big miscommunication, now BRING THE TECH. Let us know your whole combo, what you had to do to get it to idle. How you delt with the massive overlap of that cam and the stock code. I'll take any info you'll give me.

im sorry, all my engines had wild camshafts, but the duntov "30/30" camshaft is that i use, this is the only car ive owned that ive burned chips for, most others were carb and TPI stuff, it is tricky, but its not rocket science either, if you build a motor and use my chip, it may not run, like i said, i know my car and what it likes.

Don't be sorry, this board is to share our knowledge and to help each other out. We just want more info to better understand what you did. Some guys wanted you to better quantify your performance gains and all you offered was a sound clip of how kewl it sounded and how much it rowks. We can't get much from that....do see where I'm coming from?
So I'm interested in what you had to do to get it to idle well. I also noticed you just got your ECU file on the 14th, so you've been busy burning 40 chips per day since then so it should all be pretty fresh in your mind. So here we go...
1. Did you go open loop at idle?
2. Are you running synch or asynch at idle?
3. How are you dealing with the wide dynamic range of PW's that cam will require? (too small of PW at idle, too long at high rpm)
4. What size injectors and what pressure are you running?
Also that cam would render the stock O2 pretty much useless so how did you go about tuning your fuel curves?
I hope we agree that the cam you choose is a horrible mismatch to the rest of your combo. We've all done something for the heck of it, and it sounds like this was your plan all along since you're more concerned with the sound than the performance of your motor.
So please Michal, bring the tech. Take the time to let us know how you did the unspeakable of putting that raunchy cam in your stock LO3. I've got no problem with what you've done, just a problem with how you've presented it and how you've responded to some basic questions.

I'll let you organize your thoughts and make one comprehensive post as to what all you've done. Just let us know what your goals were with this cam. Also what fuel pressure were you running with the 4.3 injectors and is there a reason for the 4.3 injectors?

That doesn't really tell me much, just a well put together paragraph of what needed to be tweaked and tuned at idle would be nice. Also how did you start tuning if you didn't even have an ECU file untill the 14th?

This thread's pretty entertaining/funny. I'm just waiting now while you make another burn. Was that video a joke too? hah

Can you post us your latest bin file? What is your complete list of mods? Just the cam and the injectors or is there more?
the only other engine mod is an open air cleaner, the injectors flow about the same as the stock one, getting the engine to idle was easy, still working on part throttle. i thought there was a guy with an IROC running 11's(traxton) or something, he give one idea that really works well with a large duration camshaft. and im not just going to "give" anyone my bin file, i worked hard on it and its all my own ideas.

There isn't a certain "trick" or magic button to push to make a big cam idle. I most certianly know "how" to make a big cam idle.....doing it in practice is why I doubt you have done it so easily. But spare me the "I'm not giving me secrets away" BS, you haven't done anything earth shatering in that bin. Actually by looking at that edit log you posted it looks like you fiddled around with alot of stuff that should have been set and forgotten about. See the section where you fiddled with the initial spark advance. This constant is nothing more than the amount of spark advance that you mechanically have the distributor set to.
You're spending alot of time proving that you can walk the walk (idling video and useless edit log) and you're not spending a whole lot of time talking the talk.......which makes me doubt the walk, or skip or leap frog or whatever it is your doing in this thread.
If this post was ment as simply a place to brag about your big ole cam, with no intent of enlighting the rest of us as to why and how you did it then fine move along and we'll let this waste of bandwidth fade into the distance. If not then start providing some TECH. Let us know how you managed to move the power band up 2000 rpm and make around 100 more HP than you were making before (10 hp per MPH rule of thumb) and not increase the injector size.....even though in completely stock form LO3's are borderline static. Also please do explain how you were able to work around the jumpy eratic MAP readings....also what MAP value do you idle at???
Edit: Thats great I see you some how took the MAF tables from a mass air ecm and converted them to a VE table for your speed density TBI setup.......
Didn't know that was possible. You also know that the timing table for the ARAP chip is very agressive, too agressive for an iron head, let alone the swirl port heads on your engine, which like 28 deg of total timing.
Quick go back to searching and find some more answers to my questions.

BTW, the Duntov 30/30 is not too much hotter than the L82 cam that I had in my old 312. Granted everything on mine was setup for high RPM running. Holley Projection intake, 454 TBI unit, Heavily ported 081 heads, 1 7/8" primary headers, 2,800 stall, 3.73s, etc.

I thought the cam you were running was like a 234/244? The cam he is claiming to run is a full 20 deg bigger........That's alot.......not to mention on a bone stock 305.
I would have a completely different attitude in this thread if it would have just started like this:
Hey all, I've gone against the grain and put a huge honkin cam in my stock 305, I know it's not the best choice for power but I love the big cam sound. So here's what I had the most problems with and how I was able to make it work.
That would have been perfect, but all we got was I put this cam in and now it's Fa$T as shiznits and $OUnDs Aw$s0Me. I dunno just strikes a chord with me.
