My plans for a 305 Need YOUR help

So I have decided that I will build the 305 that proves all of ocean county NJ's bashers wrong. The thing is that this will be the second engine I've built (did a 350 with my dad) and am still no engine expert. My goal is to acheive 300rwhp possibly 350 if things go well and on a $3000 engine only budget.

So heres the questions:

1) hydrollic roller cam or flat tappet?

2) In relation to question one what year camaro/bird do I need to get this engine out of. Its going to be TBI so obviously 87 up and does the block even matter for what I slap ontop?

3) I want to bore a stroke it to a 334 (335?) what is required?

The engine will be TBI and I plan to upgrade my car to be ready for the power as I build the engine. I know my car is going to need a higher psi fuel pump, adjustable pressure, and higher lb injectors, but what else?

4) Will I require a larger TBI such as the Holley 650 CFM?

I know what I will be going as far as heads go and I'm going to shoot for Vortec unless there is some reason i shouldnt.

5) As for cam I need your help completly.

I want to have this engine dropped into my car before my senior year so that gives me roughly a year. Help mes!

PS what should the stroker kit cost?

Found this kit, price seems reasonable.

Does installing a stroker kit require a new flexplate? The crank on a LO3 have a 1 or 2 piece rear main seal?

Dont ****ing say to get a 350 I dont want a ****ing 350 if you dont have any advice for a 335 dont open your mouth on this one its not a debate.

ahaha JK. Don't get your panties in a bundle. Rotating assemblies(stroker kits) are expensive. Your money would probably be better spent on nicer heads/cam setup or suspension parts(which you will need). Your'e gonna need something better than Vortecs most likely if you plan on reaching 350 hp.

You would benefit from the Holley TBI after a head/cam swap.

You need new fuel pump, cam will be hydraulic roller.

Ok so I am shooting for a hydrollic cam. I thought that Vortecs were top of the line...whats better out there?
Also what year 305 blocks came stock with a hydrollic cam so that I dont have to worry about leaving something out or forgetting to replace something from a flat tap cam to hydraulic conversion. And do you know if the block even matters? Like will a carb'd block make a difference? Its still an LO3 with a TBI sitting ontop correct?

I'd also like to know what benefit doing the stroker would give me. If I am looking at $700 for 20hp then no way I'll do that...but $700 for 50hp is another thing to me.

Well any stroker will require more air to feed it's needs so in essence you'd have to get bigger heads/cam setup anyways.

You should reconsider your budget as you'll find that the price for preparing your rear/tranny for 350 horses will probably require more than half of the budget of your engine setup at it's cheapest. I'd go economical if you only have 3k to spend as, let's face it, modding takes some dough.

Meh I slept on it and realised that to spend $1500 more on a 350 hp engine and gain 1 or 2 mpg's isnt worth it. I'm thinking I am going to find a chevy van with a 350 TBI and rear that already has a posi. I'll save myself so much money by already having my rear and only needing gears instead of housing. Plus with the 350 I can keep it TBI throw a mid ranged cam in and port and polish the stock heads and probably hit 350hp like that instead of tweaking everylast thing on a 305.

I'm building a carbed 305 stroker(335). Building the whole thing for less than $2k. I am going to have it Dyno'd to get the real numbers, but according to my Computor engine simulation software and some basic math I'm estimating the HP to be close to if not more than 350hp @ 5800 rpm and torque to max out at 365lb ft torque@ 4700rpm. Thats almost 1.1 hp per cubic inch, which is not that far fetched. It can be done on a budget if thats what your on.

Yeah but you would have made 390 hp and saved over 200$ if you had done a 350....

To each his own, keep us updated.

I have (2) 350 4 bolt main motors sitting on my garage floor begging to be built. Been there, done that. Just looking to try something different. Its not about which is better and which is cheaper to build and make power. I guess for you guys with no money and on a tight budget with only one chance to get it right and make power, the 350 stroker is your best bet. I on the other hand have lots of time and resources to mess around and have some fun. If it doesn't work out the way I want it to then I will try something else and so on. I am planning to build a 302 roller motor from one of the 350 4 bolt motors I have in waiting. Thats gonna be real screamer, and will be built for under $2k. No it probably won't make 350/383 power, but who cares! The picture below is a 355 Aluminum head Roller motor I just put together for a member here on TGO. Has all the go fast goodies and tricks inside, everything new for less than $2k......Thats what he wanted, so thats what he got !....So yes, to each his own.
