stock valve springs would never be able to keep that engine happy, my guess would be that someone has already swapped them out.

The stock ones are garbage, you can probably get a couple hp in the top end on a completely stock motor just by replacing them. So yes you should get some new ones.

Get yourself the tuning equipment and just get a cheap set of springs, for about $30 you can buy a complete set that are a lot better than stock. If you break a spring, that tune you just got isn't going to do a thing.

After looking at the cam specs in your other post, that cam has .465 lift with stock 1.5 rockers with 1.6 rockers it has .496 lift.....
your stock heads even on their best day would only clear between .460 and .480 lift. Every head I've ever measured was touching the valve seal at .480 lift and you're supposed to have .050 clearance to make sure you never kiss the seal.
If you haven't done it already, you are going to round off some cam lobes. A set of springs just isn't going to cut it. They will better control the valvetrain and prevent coil bind, but you'll need machine work to increase your valve seal to reatainer clearance.

Good cheap springs that will drop in with no modifications: Comp 981s. Look around, they're reasonably priced and have considerably more pressure than stock ever did. They even work well on mild roller cams even though they are typically supplied with flat tappet cams. Stock springs are barely adequate for a stock cam. ANYTHING performance oriented and they won't keep up. Espeically with 1.6s, they'll never keep up.
Agreed, if you're adding 1.6 rockers to a cam with .465 lift using 1.5s you're over .490 and beyond what just about any stock factory head can handle with retainer-to-guide clearance getting real tight over .470".

Basically your valve retainer will crush into the valve seal, if you're lucky the seal will have enough give that it won't instantly bend a pushrod or round off a cam lobe.
What WILL happen is that over time the extra force from your retainers bottoming out will round off your cam lobes. Might have already happened, might take a while. If you hear any kind of valve tick it's already happened. I rounded off a few lobes once and couldn't hear it over the normal header tick.
Your best bet is to pull a valve cover pull a spring and measure your actuall seal to retainer clearance. Really there is no reason to, I can say with almost certainty that it's touching.
