also can some one explain to me how the this works, i thought the computer had control over the timing and would just move it back within spec. the car pings all the time and has since i got it. is there a performance gain/ loss or gas mil affect from setting the base timing any where then stock?

Ok, look in the "new to tbi" sticky at the top, it explains setting timing on these cars. Basically you set the base distributor timing to whatever and then the computer takes it from there. So, you need a timing light to check it, then you unplug the EST connector that is a tan/black wire just over the passenger side strut tower.

Now, stock setting is 0* timing with the connector unplugged. You can set it safely most likely from 0-4* advanced. You may pick up a little power with it 4* advanced, just try it and see, if it pings still retard it to 0*.

well i have it at 6 now and it pings alot. I will lower it to 0 and if the ping goes away try and up it in 1 degree increments untill ping returns next friday i will be racing it so i will compare times.

regular of course lol, no one i know can afford mid grade or premium now adays for a daily driver. the car calls for 87 and thats what i feed it. i just sold my nova and reason was it required premium and only put 200 miles on it in 2 years lol course it ran 11.2 at 121 on spray but after 7 years i was ready for a regular gas using street toy. I will slowly tweak this 305 into the 13s but regular gas will be a must for it.

The car calls for 87 because the base timing should be at 0*.

You could never get away with 87 on a 6* advanced timing. You probably could with 91.

The highest you can probably go while still on 87 would be 4*. It all depends on your car though. If you plan on keeping it at 6* advanced, give it something better than 87.

i have it at 2 now but it was raining to hard today to be able to hear any pinging.. here is another question when i floor it down the road it pulls nice and smooth and with good power but every now and then it seems to stop pulling for a second then resume you could liken it to the ac compresser being turned on and off and dragging down the pwer a bit. is this the knock sensor pulling out timing from ping or somthing else?
