Question about advancing my timing.....
I was wondering, I have a hypertech thermomaster, now does that advance my timing? And by how much? If I wanted to check it out or advance it higher, what kind of epuipend would I need and how do I do, step by step please, this is my first time doing this and I am going to the track soon and I need it in top shape. There is a 305 TPI IROZ thats going to be there and I got to try and beat him.

I've heard stories of people getting less advance with Hpertech chips than with stock. That aside though, the best way to get optimal timing will require a timing light, a distributor wrench, and your ears. To check your timing: Get engine to normal operating temps. Shut off. Connect timing light to battery and #1 plug wire. Disconnect spark advance by unplugging the brown wire that should be sticking out of the wire loom on the passenger side in front of the heater box. Remove air filter assy. to get it out of the way, but be sure to not unplug anything from it. Loosen distributor hold down just enough to be able to turn distributor. Start engine. (Make sure no leads from the timing light are going to get caught in the belt!) Point timing light at balancer. Stock on a TBI will be 0* advanced. (you might need a flashlight to see the numbers) Advance timing 2* by turning distributor and watching timing mark. Stop engine, disconnect timing light, reconnect spark advance, and go for test drive. If you hear no pinging under load, repeat the previous steps until you do, then retard timing by 1* or until pinging stops. This should be the optimal advance. In my experience, both stock and with mods, 4* has been the best advance.

D_amn it dude. You make it sound so eassssyyyyy.
U want to come over? I will try this out and hope I don't **** anything up in the process. Never done this before and I hate doing this to my own stuff when I don't really know what to do. Ya know? But thanks anyways, I will use this and check it out. Oh, and how would I go about checking my timing now? Just to see what it is at? Is there a electronic device that I can get to do this? Thanks

The cheapest way to check your timing is to get a timing light at any auto parts store. A basic light doesn't cost a whole lot. It really is an easy job to check and adjust timing, once you've done it a couple of times, the hardest part of the job will be finding the tools in your garage...
