I know I'll need a digital volt meter, vacuum gauge and test light. What else? Is there some kind of code reader scan tool?

A laptop computer, WINALDL (free diagnostic data logging software) and an cable adaptor to go from the ALDL port under the steering column to your laptop computer.

I actually prefere to look at diagnostics as a way to SAVE money. Without properly diagnosing the problem you could throw money at a motor for a long time and never fix the problem.
My $5 aldl cable has paid for itself a 1000 times over.

How long is the cord on an aldl cable? Maybe if I could get one long enough, I could run it from the car to the computer in the house.

A cheap laptop costs about as much as the wire to hook it to your desktop. I paid 20$ for my laptop. The battery doesn't work but I just hook it up to the cig. lighter once the car is started up.
