just got my dream car

Hey all you third gen nuts just thought i would inform you on my recent purchase. I just closed the deal a half hour ago. Its a black 91 rs with the TBI 305 its got the T5 tranny. Im 17 and bought the car for 3700 i was working 60 hours a week at a garage over the summer so i could afford it. Well its got some problems like a fair amount of rust on the frame and back bumper it needs a tune up and the hood nees to be adjusted. I plan on doing all the work myself cause i really want to learn about how these beasts run. So any questions or coments would be apreciated. Thanks

Congrats. I remember my first F-body. (A whopping 2 years ago). It was a 2.8L POS. But you couldnt tell me it wasnt the baddest thing on the road. Now, I know better. So I think its good that this guy could start out w/ a V8. So, from me to you, Congrats.

Welcome to the World of 3rd gens -- dash rattles, slow power windows, harsh ride and leaking t-tops -- Yeah, I love 'em too!!! I've had 5 of them, and I've loved 'em all. I recently bought an 89 RS. You would thought I bought a new 'Vette or something. I have a 2000 Z71 that hasn't been cranked in a week -- just can't stay outta my RS. My first car was an 82 Z28, and I still have it(you can see it at http://www.bassettracing.cz28.com)

Congrats on purchasing ur thirdgen. A beast though? You will quickly learn what kind of engine u purchased soon enough, just don't go try and racing other V8's just yet. The second site in my sig (the last one) has a bunch tech tips and mod tips on the 305 TBI that I have done in my sig. I think it might help you out if thats what u plan on doing.

Hey man, congrans on the 'maro. Sounds like a nice car. In regards to the plugs, I did mine about a month ago, and yes it is 100 times easier to get them from underneath. I dont see how you could get all of them from up on top. Good luck with your new ride

I want to make this a rule, anybody object?

TBI = Fuel Delivery. NOT A BAD THING

now,

L03 = Engine. A BAD THING.

ok, everybody got that, sorry its just driving me insane to see the two used as synonyms.

Congrats on the car....tune it up, fix the dents, keep it waxed, armor-all the tires, maybe put a nice sound system in it, DEFNITELY put an alarm on it.
Trust me, its not the engine specs that are gonna make you feel good, its the looks you get from the ladies when you pull up or cruise by and its the comments people make when they hear that V-8 rumble.

I am not gonna get started on anything.....

I found changing the plugs was the easiest from underneath on the driverside and from up top on the passenger side (except for plug 7 on the driver side, go underneath for that.) Took me about 30 minutes maybe, can't really remember, didn't check. Hope this helps. Did u go to that site I made? What did u think of it? Guess I outa put the easiest way to install plugs on there too huh?

Adam, I am your friend, and I am telling u.......TBI SUCKS! J/K It isn't that greatest thing that came out of GM but it can work right if u tune it and modify it. Just takes a little extra work to run it fast thats all.

The Only way I ever got mine to stop leaking was to get new seals from GM. I think there are some aftermarket companies that carry these, but I just ordered them from GM. this was on an 83 Z28 that was pretty used up when I got it. I personally prefer the hardtops and the two I have now are hardtops, but the T tops are nice in the summer. Good luck w/ getting them sealed up.

My T-Tops used to leak like nothing else (every time it rained I had a huge puddle in the passenger side floor board). It took a tube or two of silicon caulking, but they seal pretty good now.

You sound like me a couple years ago. I bought a red RS with 305 TBI auto for only $50 more than you spent. The guy already had SLP headers and 3" cat. He also had the 16x8 centerline 5 hole wheels which I like a lot. Oh yeah, and it had 3.08 gears. I really like the car but just recently the engine desided to burn serious oil so it's gotta go. I'm going to be keeping TBI so I can pass emmisions and just because it's going to be a daily driver. I am not going to half *** any of it. Holley 670 TB, 350 injectors and pressure reg adjustable, carb intake w/adapter plate, custom chip, and of course either the vortec 330hp 350 or the 285hp roller cam 350. I'm still trying to work out if vortec heads will pass emission in NJ or not. Am I forgeting anything?

snflupigus, I honestly don't remember the actual price, This was about 5 years ago and if I remember correctly (don't quote me though) I think they were in the $160-$180 range, I do know that at the time I was in college, and I remember being amazed that they were so high ($200 HAS to go a LONG way when your in college!!) But I'll try to find the receipt, I always keep things like that, but I'll have to locate it. I think SoffSeal makes them too, and there probably cheaper than GM.

A little bit of patience, some driving around without interior molding on the A-pillars and some silicone caulking fixed ALL my leaky t-top problems. There is no need to go out and spend hundreds on new seals (unless they're totally dried out and cracking). Just take that silicone to every crack you find, trace the water to every screw hole and attack it.

Oh, one other thing Adam, the hatches like to leak too, right near the top where they're bolted on. Mine did and I fixed that with silicone too! Just take the molding strip off (4 easy screws) and you'll see, unscrew each bolt, put a dab of silicone on and screw them back on. Do one at a time so the hatch doesn't tempt popping off. Email me if you've got any other problems.

Other than that, congrats on the new car! Have fun with the bondo too ;-) I've done that with my previous bird and it takes some getting used to.

And I don't know about anybody else around here but nobody's said that a TTA is their dream car... sure is MINE!

congrats on the car. if ya look at some of the old topics you'll see "LO3 ET's Please", that will be a good place for you to look for some of the power mods available to you. and check out the tech for the ultimate tbi mods.
my dream car is a 67 stingray convertable, 427w/ 6 pack, and close ratio 4-sp. my neighbor had one when i was a kid. if i close my eyes i can still hear those sidepies rumbling up the street.

Adam - Congrats on the car!
I live in CT also. I have owned 7 thirdgens so far... 87 IROC at the moment. I am picking up an 88 Formy w/305 TBI next weekend. If ya ever have a question or need a hand with something, let me know.

You might also want to check out www.nethirdgen.org
it doesn't contain the tech info that this site does, but it more of a place to just get to socialize and get to know other thirdgen owners in the Northeast.
