LT1 cam w/ TBI
LT1 cam w/ TBI
Ok fellows, another quick question. I can get my hands on a 20,000 mile LT1 cam from a friend for $50.00. Has anyone tried this with TBI? This car (89 RS)is only a daily driver that I want a little more power out of, this L03 is killin' me!! This cam change(whichever cam I finally decide on)will also involve a head change to #416's or angle milled #041's--probably the #041's) Just want imput on how the LT1 cam will work with a stock computer/Hypertech chip. Thanx guys.
But, it wont be too safe, stock chip (basically what a hypertech chip is) and stock injectors will equal lean on anything with any sort of performance. Im running around 20 psi with my stock injectors and I am way maxxed out on the chip side (I shoulda started off with more pressure) if that tells you anything and this is a 305 too
I was about to do the same with Impalla SS cam($50) but people said it wasn't worth the trouble. I got 153k miles and no headers, stock heads. maybe If I had 100k miles I'd do it and get some older heads like pablo, polish them, get some cheap 1.6 rockers on top...

So, Pablo, are you recommending running bigger injectors to cure the lean condition? I have a 454 TBI truck trottle body that I had thought about using, what do you think? I forgot to mention that i will also be changing to Hedman shortys & Y pipe that I had on my 82Z28 at one time(upgraded to full length) and an Edelbrock Performer intake.
Tas - This car has 136,000 miles on, but I the lady that I bought it from (original owner) a paid a local chevy dealer $2400 to install a new L03 long block( I feel for the misguided soul!!)@ 98,000 miles b/c of noisy lifters at startup. That is really the only reason I'm not replacing the whole engine.

so it only has 38k miles? OOoo. lotsa options now ..
Yes, the car actually runs great. It cranks well in 20 degree weather, get killer gas mileage, and SOUNDS like it would run(cat-delete and Dynomax Super Turbo), but it just doesn't have a lot of power. The open element, MSD coil, Hypertech chip, exhaust mods, and the the 3.42's helped it tremendously(especially the 3.42's)but I would like it, maybe, in the low 14's. thats not that fast (compared to my 82 Z), but it would about as fast as 93-95 stock LT1, which would be plenty for I what I use it for. I'm new to the TBI stuff, which is why I am trying to weigh all my options before I do anything. Thanx again

The problem with just putting larger injectors is that youll make your car richer all around and not just where it needs it, IE at higher rpm. Just look at it exactly like jetting your carburetor
imagine having your motor setup perfectly with a holley 400 cfm 4 barrel right now, and jetting that perfectly suits your stock L03
then imagine doing the mods you plan on, and either using the same exact carb, or another larger carb, say a 650, but with the same exact jetting, accel pump, powervalve, etc as the 400 cfm carb
it wouldnt run too well, and as you know you just cant increase jetting across the board, the primaries might be fine for example but the secondaries might need a big boost in jetting etc
same thing with the tbi although alot easier to change
Itll run allright i suppose but keep in mind its not gonna be on the money and will probably be lean on the top end unless you jack up FP or bigger injectors which will make you too rich everywhere else
I suggest getting a prom burner and the software and just jumping in, before you know it youll be converting your 82 to fuel injection
I ran mine with a much larger cam for quite awhile on the stock chip and it did allright though so go for it just know that its not gonna be set up optimally, and keep an eye on your plugs for signs of leaning out or detonation etc if this is just for 'in the mean time'

As Pablo said that really is a pretty mellow cam and your car should run just fine. That cam will want a little more fuel than stock and the MAP change it shows the computer should be just about right. Again, as Pablo said, get an AF monitor and watch it like a hawk over 4000rpm to check for a lean condition.

All 87+ engines in our cars are roller, no matter what the size or which model they came in. An 89 engine from a camaro is a roller block.

Ah, I see... I'm more familiar with the truck L05/L03. The '87-'95 truck blocks have the one-piece rear main seal, blocked fuel pump location, and canted center head bolts, but unfortunately, no roller cam/lifters.
However, back to topic, it seems if you are going to the trouble of a cam install, why not spend another $30-50 and get a new cam thats a little hotter. I would think with a roller you could get a little more radical and keep the map from flaking out.

Is the LO3 cam actually a roller? I knew the block was machined for it, but I never really knew whether the cam was actually a roller. It doesn't matter either way, I have an L98 with a thrown rod (heads were gone, unfortunately) that I can get the lifters and retainers from. I was just curious about the L03 cam. Thanx
Oh yeah, Pablo, what kind of money am I looking at for the Prom burner software and were can I get it. No one close to where I live does this(that I know of) and I am interested in learning more about the FI/computer stuff. Carbs have got boring!!

What company makes the prom burner that you have Pablo? How difficult is it burn the chips. I know absolutely nothing about this, so any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanx in advance.

I have a needhams PB10 ( www.needhams.com ) i bought one of their factory refurbished units, usually their burners are a bit more expensive liek 140 i think but when you call ask if they have a factory refurbished one, they sell cheap, i got mine for 90 and it has a warranty for a year
check out the prom burning article in the tech section of this website for more info, tim siford wrote an excellent article, and read all of the links they are full of valuable information
If you know all about how a carb functions you have a pretty good base for tuning proms everything is very similar
