New to TBI need advice

Hey, I just got a 92 Camaro Convertible with the 305 TBI 5.0. I have called a couple people asking about how to get a real boost in power and they tell me that switching out engines would do it, but it is quite expensive. What can I do to my car that will help it out, but have a reasonable price?

Let me ask a few questions. What do you consider a reasonable price? Would you want to do this yourself?
I say you could go to the mods section take a look, particularly at one where you use a dremel and shave some of the TBI
Headers
Open element - sound more than anything though
Exhaust work

I would like to do the work myself, but being less mechanicaly inclined would probably get some professional help. I was thinking something less than a 1000 bucks. i have looked over the taking a drill to the tbi documents, but have yet to see anything that gives me any kind of idea as to what kind of performance boost I will get. I have also heard that putting a new exhaust will give me some more power and make it sound a lot better.

Bang for Buck. Get some headers, from what ive seen, a lot of people seem to like edlebrocks TES's, and have some new rearend gears installed. 3.73 or 3.42's up to you.

o, headers are good for 20hp+ and gears will get you accelerating much quicker.

That should get you in for under 1000, and youll get the most increase in performance from the least amount of money.

Dont listen to those freaks that think the only performance mod for a car is a bigger motor.

I wonder what all the 350 fanatics would say if people with big blocks tell em to pull their 350 and drop a 540 was the only way to make their car faster.

NillaHead, I made a site to kinda help out first time TBI modders. It has pictures and decent instructions about to install certain mods. Comes with pictures and everything and an evaluation with all the mods. I figure everyone always asks "what does this mod do?" and stuff so I figured I would just make this site dedicated to that with pictures and what not. Its the second website in my sig and the site has all the mods that are listed in my sig. Tell me what u think and what I could do better or e-mail me if u have a question about a mod. Thanks.

Hey thanks a lot you guys. that web page did help out. i think from the sounds of things i will go for the headers and exhaust area.

By the way, what the guy I bought the car from said that it has struts on it, I think they are Koni or something like that, are those just for adjusting how high or low the car sits?

thanks again

If indeed you have Koni adjustables, that is very good, unless they're really old. They're not for adjusting ride height, they're for adjusting stiffness. Usually we have to compromise when buying shocks between performance and comfort, although most shocks are a reasonable combination of the two...but you have the best of both worlds. So, crank the shocks one way before you pick up Grandma to bring her to bingo, and crank 'em the other to glue the rubber to the road and toast rustangs. I think 1 is the softest and 5 is the stiffest; also be aware that very soft shocks make it harder to maneuver, i.e. swerve, should something happen on the road, so stiff for control and tracion, light for ride. Try going heavier on the rear shocks to glue your drive wheels and going just a little softer up front for a nice ride. One guy I talked to says he almost always stays at 2 or 3; 4 or 5 are purely for drag racing! Perhaps he was exaggerating...not that anybody does that when talking about their ride...Above all, experiment. Enjoy!

Hey that's cool I got more than I thought I was getting. The car, obviously, sits pretty low to the ground so will I need a lift to get the adjustment piece or what? where is it located?

Hey everyone. Don't forget the suspension. You could have a car with 250hp run as fast as one with 350hp with an upgraded suspension. Relative low cost upgrades are strut tower brace (three point) and some subframe connectors. If you want to go all out, SLP and other companies make kits to mod everything from the struts to the brushings. These are low cost alternatives and the brace and bolt on connectors (not weld on unless you know how or have cheap access to) require minimal skill.

If I'm not mistaken, Nilla, the adjustment is right at the top of the shock...I've heard of setups where they actually come through the rear deck into the back cargo area and can be tweaked...I'm pretty sure they're screwdriver adjustable or even manually, just with hands...I almost bought some, so I did a little research...there were plenty of posts on here about it, so I'd suggest you just click search and type in like "Koni adjust" or something like that...even try Koni's website...in any case, you have some fat shocks there...even just go out to your ride and have a look...I believe they're indexed from 1 to 5, so maybe looking for those numbers should help. Sorry I can't give you concrete answers!

Thanx Baron. When I got the car from the guy he gave me a little white *** to adjust them with and said they were as stiff as they could get. I had just assumed he put them that way so it wouldn't scrape the ground as often, if I can make the ride smoother over these so called 'roads' out here I definately will.

Thanks for posting this. I just got a '91 RS and know almost nothing about TBI. Still trying to decide whether to squeeze some extra power out of the stock engine or swap in a new one.
