Engine stalls and idles bad

1989 formula 305 TBI

The is engine about to cease but than would surge back up and continue and evetually stall. But if I rev the engine and hold the accelarator for about 10 seconds the engine turns up functioning fine.

Now all of a sudden, while driving the engine is underpowered, response to depressing the accelarator is delayed, and while standing idle experiences the same as above and eventually cease. Wont restart, only after standing for the whole day, and then the problem starts all over again.

replaced fuel filter, EGR valve, no vaccuum leaks, spark plugs and wires new.

Is it a fuel pump failure?

It probably is....use a scan tool or fuel pressure gauge and watch for drops when the car starts acting up. I had a very similar problem and that was what I would up replacing.

I grew up in Flatbush

Are your injectors leaking? A little more information would be helpful. My guess would be to check the fuel pressure first. If it's not a fuel problem, check the usual: IAC valve, TPS, CTS. I usually don't hear of fuel pumps "going" out though. They usually just "go" out.

I am not sure what you mean by leaking fuel injectors?

Can this problem be caused by an old and beat up catalytic converter, that leaks exhaust?

Also when the engine is cranking, but not actually starting, small amounts of smoke seem to come from behind the engine block.
it's blue smoke, is it just deposited oil?

I already bought the new pump, but do not want to get into all that work before troubleshooting all the relative components.

What do you guys specifically recommend I look for, and how? This is my first F-body.

More information

I removed the throttle body enclosure and cranck the engine, the injectors are dry
the fuel pump relay clicks but no fuel is getting to the throttle body, also i looked to see if the injectors are energized when the ignition is halfway and one of them lites up with the tester but no the other

I have been using a 160 thermostat for a while now, even in cold weather especially now its been 15-20 degrees, could this extensive use have put the car in open loop permanently and locked something out with the fuel delivery system?

160 stat isnt going to "lock the computer up".
this looks like a coincidence. I would however change the 160 stat out. I think the days of 160 hype are over. try a new injector. look over your wires. find a scantool if you can.

I don't have a scan tool, are there other ways to get output from the computer?

I am dumbfounded, I have spark, the engine rotates, the injectors recieve charge, but no fuel is reaching them, logic would tell me the pump is busted, but I have read other posts with similar descriptions and the fuel pump issue rarely came up.

I forgot to mention that whenever I spray carb. fluid into the throttle body and turn the ignition, the car would start up only to burn up whatever was sprayed into it.
I bypassed the fuel pump relay prong A and E by connecting them together after snaping off the relay itself.

What do you think, please reply it is quite urgent

Its your fuel pump!!!!! Yes they can act up and not go out completly, i've had it happen to me three or 4 times. The best test is to test the connector back at the fuel tank if you are getting power there and not pumping fuel you know that the problem is in the tank. I have changed more than 10 fbody fuel pumps and have developed what I consider the fasestest and easyest method for changeing the pump. No I don't cut a hole in the car. If you are interested e-mail me and I'll give you the details.

By the further description of your problem, I would agree it's the fuel pump. If you ain't getting the fuel then it ain't pumpin'.
