TBI tuneup kit?
what is this TBI tuneup kit I hear about. My car is a 1990RS with 26,000 miles. Would I need one one of these TBi tuneup kits or is that for TBI's with higher mileage? Does it yeild any preformance or just maintainance? I am really curious because I hear of guys doing it to their cars all the time. Also, if this is something i should do, how much is the kit and where do I get it. Is it easy to do or should I let a garage do it. thx alot guys I appreciate all your help!

ya, you replace the gaskets in the tbi injector pod, and the gasket under the tbi, along with the o-rings on the injectors and fuel fittings and plastic washers.

ok it is making more sense to me now. So I will need this kit if I do the ultimate TBI mods? What is wrong with the stock gasket and seal? How mush is it and where do I get it? Can I do the mods without it?
thx

dealer, your stock gaskets are going to tear and rip because theyve been on so long, and about 10 bucks i think. mine was 6 at wholesale cost.
well actually there are a few different kits. one just for the injector pod, and another for the entire tbi, go to a larger dealer and they should have one of each in stock. little dealers have little parts inventory.

I belive the original idea behind the TBI tune up/rebuild kit was to trick folks into "rebuilding" TBI's that didn't need it. The idea was the TBI crowd wouldn't know the difference and would treat it just like a carb. So folks would spend on a regular basis and shell out the $$$ for work that wasn't needed.

So would you not recomend me getting it? my car only has 26,000 rigional miles on it. Would i really need it if i were to complete the ultimate TBI mods?
Yes you need it for the ultimate tbi mods. Since your taking apart your TBI to do the mods your stock gaskets fall apart. The rebuild kit is only like $14 and an extra base gasket for like $3. I got mine at carparts.com Im not sure but you might be able to get away with just two new base gaskets. I havent gotten in there to do the mods yet, i just got the gaskets and havent had a chance to do the mods yet, so im not sure if you would need the whole rebuild kit. But then again, its only $10 more then another base gasket, and you already have the TB apart. Might as well.

you will only need it if you are gona adjust the fuel pressure, the gasket under the tbi should NOT break, and the gasket under the injector pod shouldnt break. However the gasket that seals the top of the pod to the bottom, will definately break. also, your seals on your fuel lines should be fine too. as long as nobody has squashed the plastic washers by tightening them too tight. dont do this and dont strip them when you put it back on. youde be suprise how loose those can be and not leak
