tbi build up
tbi build up
Who wants to see a magazine do a performance build up using tbi as their source of fuel delivery. I haven't see any lately and would be interested to see what they could do with say a 350tbi setup.
I have the email address to Chevy Hi-Perf. It's chevyhi@emapUSA.com or Car Craft at carcarft@emapUSA.com
Send these guys an email to show your interest. Be sure to give your name, address, phone number and email address.
Iv'e already sent mine.

Brent, I must of missed that one. I would like to see one for our f-bodys simular to the one car carcraft did on the 305tpi except more radical. A 350 like chevy hi perf did in their April edition this month would be nice. They made 390hp and 426ft lbs of tq on 87oct unleaded. It only used a 625cfm demon carb. This engine would rock in a f-body with a 670cfm tbi setup.

go to the library and get the microfilm from the 1989 hotrod, look for the last three issues, october, november, december
they have a project called "F notes"
they built up a 305 tbi in a 5 speed RS with 3.73 gears
vette heads
performer carb intake
and unfortunately they dont tell you the specs of the cam
ran i think like a 14.0 or so on street tires
hit 13.8 i think on slicks

'88: They used a GM 454 TBI. It's a 2 incher so it should flow about 670cfm or so.

there are tons of TBI buildups. you guys are looking in the wrong magazines. Look in truck oriented magazines. Last one I saw was a 383 with Edelbrock TBI stuff and made 450TQ with the stock TBI on an edelbrock intake.

Tas, I don't buy or subscribe to truck mags, I don't have any reason to. But I'll take your word on it. Still would like to see one of the top car mags do it again sense I missed the last one in Hot Rod in 1989.
Yeh if I had the time I guess I would look too. I think that this board is as close to a mag build up as a lot of us get, but I still would like to some more thirdgens in a mag. Who would turn down that kind of recognition for our lowly RS's? GM built the yellow RS with the 350ramjet and it was cool but I think we can get the same performance out of our tbi's.
Then again maybe we don't need the recognition, it would ruin the stealth affect we have now. Not to many people are afraid of an RS Camaro. Not even the ricers.

I agree, there should be more build ups on our cars in the sctual car mags we all look at. BTW what mag was that 383 build up in? Don't get me wrong, I'll never get rid of the 305 but if they have a stock TBI running on that 383 I feel there is some good tech data to be gained from the article. BTW I'm new as yall've probably guessed so "Hey to all yall." On a side note I'm glad to see enough people with TBI cared enough to get a board going on it so, thanks from me to yall.

Oh boy, "yall" is giving me a headache. It's bad enough this NJ guy has to put up with people saying "pop" out here in O H I O. j/k
Welcome, TBI rules. Let me point out a few real quick facts which justify my statement.
1.)EFI advantages (+remote start
)
2.)Inexpensive like carb
3.)It's got carb power with EFI efficiency
4.)Most dependable intake system available
When was the last time somebody had an actual problem with the intake system? TPI always has injectors problems, carb guys have to rebuild what..3...4 times a year
It's easy to see that we've got a very good bang for the buck ratio. We also don't have a "tuned" port injection system that was ment to flow only for a 305. We have a system that is working great on 350's and 383 setups. God, thank you for TBI. Without it I would either be some v6 dork, a TPI 305 getting spanked by rustangs, or driving an 87 suburban right now (texas limo, we are on our second, great vehicles). To put into perspective for all of you new guys, I'm doing an engine swap between march 16-25 and the 330hp 390ft-lbs 350HO is going to cost me under $3000 shipped, everything from air cleaner wing nut, gaskets, bolts, EVERYTHING. Then how about a cam swap? I already know the cam that produces 380hp and 420ft-lbs with a 625cfm carb, I'm using a 670cfm holley TB. I'm a real chevy guy, bang for the buck baby! To finish it all up I'm also paying for college...

Ok, the article is in the Jan 2000 Hot Rod. It's titled "Workin Man's Honker". They install a 383 in a '91 GMC truck.
Specs:
TB - Stock
Injectors - 68lbs/hr (???)
Prom - Turbo City
Cam - Ededbrock TBI
Intake - Ededbrock TBI
Heads - S/R Torquers 76cc 1.94/1.50
Rockers - Crower 1.6 Roller
compression - 9:1
Results
est. 325hp/450tq (I'm not even sure the dyno'd it)
The article is short and not even worth reading. I forgot how disappointed I was.

the throttle body in the dec. 89 hotrod buildup was the stock throttle body, not the 454
magazines are a waste of time guys they dont tell you any of the meat. Anyone can bolt together an engine and put a tbi on top thats not gonna make it fast. Tuning is the key, not just the chip, but all the little tricks that need to be done to make it work. the best thing is to just go out and do it for yourself

That is so true Pablo. Tuning is key, TBI just got the bad wrap because it came on what I like to call the LO (low output) engines. All it takes is ingenuity and you can make anything work. Heck, look at MAF, everybody wanted speed density because the MAF setups had that huge screen, what happened? They enlarged it and got rid of the screen, problem solved. Same with TBI, get rid of that dumb intake ring or get a open element and you're on your way. It's the little things that add up. Custom chips and fuel pressure can make big differences.
