Open Air Element

Okay, I'm going to make the $20 upgrade tonight. What part (?Edelbrock 14x3?) drop base will I be looking for at Pep-boys or Kragen or Autozone. I would love to do this quicky mod tonight, so please let me now. Thanks again in advance.

Get a non-drop base and remove the spacer ring from the TBI unit. Also get a cap for the vacuum port on the TBI that the hose for the Thermac plugged into, and a breather for the right valve cover. They won't have a clue what'll fit properly most likely, but any 14 x 3 (or even 14 x 2) non-drop base filter assy will work. If you're planning on getting the K&N 14 x 3" filter (E-1650) it doesn't matter is the kit you buy is 14 x 3 or 14 x 2.

Yeah, I read your article first snuf thanks. I just wasn't to sure which air cleaner to buy from the parts store. After looking around last night I decided to wait and save the money by ordering from the summit catalog, its cheaper. Would a cheap aircleaner work and then buy the 14x3 K&N(actual filter) and then buy the K&N airfilter lid thingy also or would this just be redundent and a waste of money. I don't need the pretty chrome, I will eventually be building a 383(pretty sure I stay TBI), I just want to do what I can to the 305 for the time being. Thanks again.

I used to use the Edelbrock open air cleaner setup. Its advertised as a 14x3, but if you measure the filter element, its a bit smaller. In fact I found it almost impossible to find a replacement K&N filter for it due to limited supplies being on the local store shelves. If anyone knows the exact K&N filter part that fits with the Edelbrock kit pleast post.
