3.73's are the answer according to math and the track. 3.42's will help but won't get everything out of the car like the 3.73 will. it's worth another tenth easy.

Car: 1991 Camaro RS

Axle/Gears: 10-bolt w/3.73s
3.73s are only worth a tenth vs. 3.42s?? wow...thats surprising.

i am getting 3.73s within the next couple weeks...NJSPEEDER is right...they work out math wise to get you down the 1/4 in the best time.

but it depends on other stuff in your setup..is your car an auto or a 5-speed? what mods have you done? what do you want to rev the engine to? things like that.

You will actually feel the difference that the 3.73's in the seat of your pants more than probably any one other mod. Do yourself a favor and do the gears before any major engine mods like cam, heads, etc. High gears will make even a strong engine feel weak and gears will make a weak engine feel stronger.

I've had my 3.73's for about a month. MASSIVE DIFFERENCE First gear makes you glad you have a seat back, along with breaking loose on a pretty much stock LO3 in the 1-2 shift with an auto.

ya 3.73s are great in a 5 spd. I have had mine for about 700 miles and the difference from the gears is incredable.

LOL. I've been in third gear at about 90-95, near red line. I figure by the equations on the main page, that the top speed with 3.73's is about 120-125 with a 700R4. For me, I don't go all out much, so I wanted the better off the line performance.

nun,
how do you figure that? i have heard people say this before and i would really like to know what the thinking is.
the way any person should select a gear is to figure it from what their mph is in the traps at the big end. then you choose a gear that will make that speed as close as possible to the rpm of your peak hp.
in any car of ours the highest gear you will hit on the track is a 1 to 1 ratio (3rd in autos and 4th in 5spds). that works out to a 3.73 being the best gear at least until you do a cam, which is really the only way to change the position of the powerband enough to possibly demand a new gearing.

Car: 91 Red Sled
Axle/Gears: 10bolt Richmond 3.73 Torsen
Since we're on the subject I might as well ask a few opinions on rear ends. My current setup is going to be the 350ho with the peg leg 3.08 rear with auto. I was looking at the 12 bolts but they are over 2K for a ready thirdgen setup and that's a lot for a college guy. I plan on doing a cam swap to be making 380hp and 420 ft-lbs and then getting a much higher stall converter. I'm thinking I'm going to have to keep the stock rear end unit so I figured I'd get a girdle/brace, locking diff from powertrax, and 3.42 gears. Do you guys think the 3.73 gears would be a better choice? I will need the car for highway driving and even a few 540mile drives where 80mph is the norm.
