Just installed open air element and turbo city .5" spacer

I just got done putting my open air element and half inch spacer on and boy is there a difference. Wow it is hard to describe how much more power I have now. It was really easy to do. Because of your help on this board I was able to do these mods by myself and be very succesfull. With the half inch spacer I didn't even have to dissconnect any fuel lines or hoses. Just an extra set of hands to keep it (the TBI unit) off the manifold while I slid the spacer in. The hardest part was getting the gaskets to line up and to keep them from sliding around. I can also have a 14x3 element and have my hood close. My K&N is in the mail so I should still be in for a few more ponies. I have installed an MSD cap and rotor and will soon put in bosch+4 plugs and 8.5 mm MSD super conductor wires wich will help in the upper rpm's. Anyways what I am getting at, if anyone out there is a beginner and needs some tips on the mods I listed above feel free tp email me and ask any questions. I have emialed a few people and without their help i would not have been able to do this myself. I want to say thanks to all of you guys out there that helped with my spring break project But now the car has to go back to storage while I finish the school year

I, also, JUST got finished my Edelbrock 14"x3" open air. It's pretty easy. I did run into one problem though, the could wires getting in the way. It fit alright though.

My wires were in the way and the Summit air cleaner that i bought did not cleat the distributor. That is why I ordered the spacer so that it would. Make sure that your wires don't rub or they will short out and you will be screwed. Get a spacer or put some electrical tape or plstic tubing to cover your wires. i really recomend the spacer..more power and really really easy to do. Plus you can still fit a 14x3 element under the hood

So you guys are saying that a 1/2" TBI spacer and a 14"x3" non-drop air cleaner will all fit under the hood? Or did you use a drop base air cleaner?

yes a 14x3 element and spacer will fit. I don't slam my hood but just slowly push it down and it closes just fine. Mine was a non drop base from summit. I had to buy the spacer to make it fit. Plus the knock outs on it were really think and took a maching press to punch a hole for the IAT sensor. I think some of the higher price ones come with easier knockouts.

Thx bird. It takes a lot of information to do your own mods. Guys like you and the effort you make to help others makes modding your own car all the the more fun. If you pay someone else to do the work you don't learn anything about your car and won't know how to make little mods here and better set ups there. I don't think there is any such thing as a stupid question so any of you out there who don't know much about your car. Don't be afraid. Just ask and you will be suprised how much you can learn. Look for sites like 91bird305 has and you can really put a vision into perspective. His efforts help guys like me do (do it yourself) mods without just saying "put a cam, heads, headers, intake...and wham bam you runnin 12's." It is easy to make a car fast when you have endless money...but if we had that I am sure we would all have our new Modena's or Z06's by now beatin everyone on the block while our thirdgens just sit and collect dust. This site rules!!

I got the spacer from www.turbocity.com. The spacer was like 45 bucks and the instalation kit with longer bolts and new gaskets was like 9 bucks. Cheeper than the jegs 1" on which is a pain to work with. The part number for a 1 and 11/16" bore is #635-500. There are three different instal kits. I am not sure which one I got because I called to make sure it was a half inch and then they told me what kit I needed. just call. I paid like $13 shipping because I had to do the mod rather quickly before I had to go back to school. All in all, a cheap mod that take less than an hour to do. You need a gasket adhesive (for the gaskets on the manifold and TBI unit) and some carb spray to spray down the bores to clean up any adhesive that squeezes through after your bolt it down. Email me or ask and I can give you all the details on how to do this.

Yea I broke it off. There is that little metal clip that wraps around it. I just took some needle nose pliers and pealed it off. Carfull not to damage the tip. It took me awhile to figure out what to do because I didn't want to rip anything that was metal, if you know what I mean. the purpose of the clip is to keep the sesor from falling out. Your new aircleaner assembly should have a knockout in it. Luckily my dad owns a machine shop so I had the luxery of having a perfect punch. The metal was to thick to punch yourself so you'll have to get it done. However, you can just keep the sensor outside of the assembly. It depends on the cleaner you get. Mine was the super cheep one from summit, the nicer ones will have better knockouts I assume.

I used a non drop edlebrock 10x2 (procharger I think)inch open element. I used the factory spacer. I also used the factory IAT retainer. worked fine, like that. I then put a 3.x inch filter on and removed the factory spacer. My only problem was the hold down stud for the wing nut was not long enuff. I modified the lid with a 2 inch socket , rag, block of wood, and sledge hammer. worked great. There is a distinct difference with the extra inch. No interference with the hood. I think I am going to make a new stud that is about a 1/4 inch longer.
