LT1 CAM VS LT4 CAM
WITHC ONE WOULD BE GOOD TO DROP IN A 305 TBI. I HAVE A HIGHER STALL CONVERTER ALREADY AND I WANT TO KEEP IT EMMISIONS LEAGAL BUT AM GONNA DITCH THIS STOCK CAM SOON AND B/C I KNOW A CAN FIND BOTH OF THESE USED AND IN GOOD SHAPE , IM DOWN TO THESE 2 CHOICES. I ALSO DRIVE THIS CAR EVERYDAY AS WELL. ONE LAST QUESTION IS HOW MUCH OF A GAIN WOULD I SEE FROM INSTALLING EACH??
THANKS

the gains from both would be almost the same if you can find a 96-97 (285hp) LT1 cam. the prob with the extra lift on the LT4 cam is that it will put the valves almost intothe bore. this will mess with the airflow around the valve and the extra lift will get lost as turbulence interferes with proper air flow. you would get a touch more power from the LT4 cam, but i don't think the couple hp would be justified by the extra expense that you are likely to pay for it.
if the rest of your set up can handle all the new flow, ie: good heads and intake, you could gain anywhere from 25-50hp once it is all tuned in.

Ask New87. He put a used-but-nice LT1 cam in his 305 TPI with only an AFPR and dropped almost a second from his times.
