TBI TO TPI
TBI TO TPI
Have a question guys. Can you take a TPI from a 305 engine and install it on a 91 Camaro RS with a 305 that has a TBI set up
Also can you use a tpi setup from a 350 engine to? sorry for the dumb ? guys Im a Ford man that change and went to a chevy
What do i need as far parts i assume i need the whole TPI unit (Intake etc.) and wiring Harness with Computer.
Do i need the heads from the engine that has the tpi on it.
Thanks

i was thinking of doing this swap, but there is a lot into it. first, you need the entire setup, with the computer and a wiring harness. then if you have vats (vehicle anti-theft system, aka the black square in your key) then you need to reprogram the computer to deactivate this. next, you would also need a higher flowing fuel pump. also, you would want the setup from a 305 car, as they have 19# injectors, as compared to the 350's 22#, which would be too large. you won't need to swap in the heads from the TPI car, but it would be a good idea, as ours are terrible. overall, i don't think that the swap is worth it, unless you have a lot invested in the internals of your LO3. i'd recommend putting your money towards something like an LT1 cam, and then hold off until you get enough money for a 350. that's my plan. also, you could check the archives for other times that this has come up...well, we've got some t-storms coming in, and my lights a starting to flash...gtg

I don't think you'll want to put a TPI setup on the stock Lo3 heads. The Lo3 heads are the worst thing to happen to TBI, ever heard of swirl port and no, I'm not talking about the hemi (awesome) heads!
As for having troubles with VATS, that's funny. It takes only a $1 part from Radio Shack to "fix" any VATS troubles. E-mail me if you NEED that info, I'm not suposed to post it on the forum (not my rule but I'll respect it). It just doesn't make sence to put ANY good intake system on the Lo3 heads. That is my opinion and I'm sticking too it. Only thing I would do with a stock Lo3 is open element (gears and posi for the car). The Lo3 really is a worthless motor but it IS different. I think it's really cool (unique at least) to build up from the base v8. Tim (NJSpeeder) is running 14.2's with the Lo3 bottom end and stock cam. Brian/Kyle are problem shooting their Lt4 hot cam Lo3 with vortec intake blah blah. It's fun making the underdog faster than the Lt1's and even sometimes the LS1's (N2o Lo3 guys running 13.2's). If I had the time I probably would have stayed with the 305 and built it up with all the goodies. Instead I needed my car on the road so I went for a $3000 1 week swap
.
I have a feeling that TPI guys have told you that TBI is worthless. If that's the case, tell them to swap their "gift from God" intake onto an Lo3 to prove to you that the intake is SO important. All TBI, carb, and TPI have been proven to be good intake systems, all with pros and cons so don't believe that TPI is the only way.
Good luck either way but please get rid of the Lo3 heads if you have the time and money.

Why are the Lo3 heads so bad(specifics)? and what would be a better replacment?

92 Camaro 305 TBI. Everything stock so far except a shift kit.
Future mods. Spark plug wires and plugs, tint, Cutting off cat and new 3inch pipes. Maybe putting 2 glass paks for effect. any other advise on getting to 300+ HP would be appreciated. Thanks

Lo3 heads have a "swirl port" on the intake runner that blocks almost half of the runner to make for a swirl. It's BS really, TPI heads are better. Best move would probably be going with vortec heads but you would need a custom intake. I know there are a lot of vette heads floating around that would also work well with an Lt1 cam. Basically the "swirl heads" aren't even worth their weight in scrap if that tells you anything.

My dad converted his TBI RS to a TPI setup, using stock parts and keeping the TBI heads and cam. He gained 17 HP and 70 TQ at the rear wheels. I guess thats how bad TBI is, eh?
There is a tech article on this site that tells you how to convert, but its really a hack.
