Camshafts...mufflers...TurboCity.com?

Hey all a few questions here. First off, i'm looking to get a new camshaft, i've got my mind pretty much set on a CompuCam 2020. I have a 91 RS 305. Can anyone suggest something else, and if so WHY GET IT? Also im looking to get a muffler, i've seen the 80-series by flowmaster, and it looks appealing? Sound ok? One last thing, i was looking at this TurboCity.com and saw they had what looked to be just a REBUILT TBI, they were selling it to what came out to be like 29.95 after CORE RETURN. said it garunteed 10-20% more airflow? Anybody have experience with them or that type of modification? Let me know

i know i have looked at their prices before for things you can do yourself, ported TB's and AFPR's, and they seemed really $$$$$$$$. never dealt with them though. just my opinion.

Your car has a roller cam in it. The Compucam 2020 is a flat tappet. You would be better off with a stock LT1 cam which you can find on ebay or various boards for $25-$35. The LT1 will give better HP than the Compucam 2020. Buying used roller cams is ok. They don't wear like flat tappet cams.

brharris is right, I just bought an LT1 cam off of ebay for 35 bucks about a month ago. Haven't installed it yet, but it looks to be in great shape. As far as Flowmaster goes, I like their sound a lot better than stock, I am currently running one. IMO though, Glasspack or Borla sounds the best.

I just installed a used LT1 cam with my old lifters, and it works fine with my stock chip.Installation went smooth. The pin in the cam stuck out to far compared to my old cam, so I just ground it off shorter to match.I'm sure a custom chip would help some more but I'm not ready to do that yet.Dont remove AC condenser, just remove the clip that holds lines to the frame and pivot it up out of the way.I wired mine up to the hood while I changed cams.

JokerRS, can you give us some feed back on your cam swap and total driving feel?(stock vs mod) What mod was the biggest gain? Was it worth it? Is there anything you would have done different? Was the gain as big as you expected? Looks to me that you have the perfect combo for neat street on the cheap!!!!!

I have had the cam in two weeks and would still like to do some more fine tuning when I find the time. How ever its working great as is.I advanced my ignition timing from 6 to 8 degs, and I might try a little more.I also want to bump up the fuel pressure and see how it responds.I lost a little low end torque, but it actually hooks up a little better as a result.I gained some mid and top end power as expected.I installed the edelbrock manifold at the same time so I dont know how much the cam itself is good for.I dont have a local strip so I have a 1/4 mile marked off on the high way just to compare mod. increases by end speed.I realize its not acurite, but it shows me if I have increased the power with a mod.Stock speed was 82 mph.My mods. have brought me up to 94 mph in a 1/4.Still want to tune my combo some more.If I were to do it all over I would by a G-tec and keep a more acurite record.By the way so far the cam and intake were good for 4 mph.The whole exhaust system was good for 4 mph.And the rest of the mods combined were good for 4 mph in a 1/4 mile.
This was about what I expected with this combo. But its never enough is it.

91ThunderRS more cam than that won't do you much good unless you change heads valve springs and exhaust. LT1 cam is plenty for a stock 305 TBI. Its way better than the Compucam 2020 you were wanting. If you want more cam I have a used ZZ4 roller cam that I bought off ebay and have decided not to use (just going to replace motor later this year). If you or anyone else wants it for $80 shipped just let me know.

Actually, YES, i will be replacing most everything with the engine. Like = the heads, they will be replaces with 305 Vortec heads (freshened up), Whole new exhaust, Heddman headers, with a flowmaster capping it all off. Also there will be a new Intake (edelbrock), so with all of these now in mind...what type of Cam should be put in my soon to be BeAsTLy Car???

I want to put a LT4 Hot cam $174 from Scoggin Dickey in my new motor. Check out the specs on their site. Its a little more than ZZ4 and not radical so it should drive nicely on the street. If you want more cam than that go with the Competition Cam roller series. Just don't go below 112* lobe separation or your computer will be mad.

You don't think that an LT4 Hot cam will be too radical for my application? I heard those things get wicked! Also, were can i find some specs on the ZZ4 Cam? I see you have one for sale, but if it's not gonna be the CompCam 2020, then i wanna see excactly HOW good i can go, before my computer starts to act up on me...

No, that's $229.95 + $200.00 core return charge...not $229.95 - $200.00 core return. What's really happening here is that TurboCity is charging you $230 to do the dremel work described in the Ultimate TBI section. Certainly not worth it.
