K&N, which one to choose?

Keeping a TBI, which setup would you most recommend for maximum air flow?

- K&N Cold Air intake attached to the stock single snorkel
- Open Element filter with K&N Filter Lid thingy
- Dual Snorkel intake with a pair of K&N filters
- Homemade Ram Air kit attached to air dam

I have a 89 TBI and I use the 14X3 that would fit a quadra Jet.

Ive got the open-air type....sometime in the future when I get a new hood designed to get more air into the engine it would really benefit.

I have a single snorkle with a K&N, I noticed a little power increase, but it could just be my mind playing tricks on me. tomorrow I'm getting a 14"x3" drop base open element. I'll keep you posted.

Okay cool
I was considering open element w/ filter lid because of the surface area.

non-drop base is the best. that way the air doesn't need to make a 90 degree turn down to find the TBI. I got a paper filled open element for $17. When I decided how much clearance I needed, I then got a 14x3 K&N for it.

today I got my open element (drop base 14x3 paper element, soon to be K&N)and I put it on in the parking lot. Wow what a difference, more response. IT GROWLS WHEN I STEP ON IT, COOL!!!!! best 32 bucks i spent on the car, 5 times better than the 40 dollar K&N for a single snorkel.

Question!!!

With the open element - does it get u in trouble with emmisions???

And does it have a noticeable effect on miles/gallon???

But after vicV8rs91's description - i might just get it!!! lol

Thanks
Jay

I had my car emmisions tested and it did fine.

I don't think that the K&N xtream lids are worth the money unless you can somehow get cooler air into the engine (cowl hood or ram air hood).

Please don't make a homemade cold air for your car, you'll make it on beaterz.com ...

Just buy a regular 14x3 non drop base element and when it goes bad put a K&N in it..

After I did My OE i notice I ran cooler on freeway and non stop traffic...

However I noticed that in stop/go traffic the temp went up ... 1)90+*weather, 2)sitting there for 5+ min at a time.

Other than that I like it. When I step on it, i can HEAR it working(Ssssiiiiiii)... I think somehow opening up the hood ot having an opening in the hood will benfit for the stop/go..

Just my $.02

the IAC sensor shouldnt be to much of a problem just stick on the firewall some where. I used a zip tie and put it around one of the wires on the firewall
