lt1 cam question
lt1 cam question
i have a good deal coming thru on a lt1 cam.. he actually has like 3 of them one from a 94 and the others from 95-97 motors i was wondering which one i would want? one of them has a short dowel pin and the other a long one which would be easier to put in?are all the lt1 cams the same size? thanks

the later cam, from teh 97, would be best. the early cam design has a split duration with matching lift on the intake and exhaust side. the later cam has the same duration deign but lift on the exhaust side is bumped from .450 to .460, for a little better breathing. on the stock LT1 it created 10hp more at the same rpm and a flatter torque band.
go for the 97 cam if the guy still has it. the dowel pin is not a big deal, if it is too long you can just grind it down.

I read that it should give you about a half a second with the cam alone. I wish I had done the swap this summer as planned, but **** came up

PimpRS,
There are about six different factory grinds for LT1 cams. Get the part numbers and check the specs before you buy. The part number is generally found behind the front journal.
Incidentally, the dowel makes no difference. The longer dowel can be driven deeper into the hole to the correct depth for a "standard" SBC timing set - you don't have to grind it off since the factory drilled the holes extra-deep.

In theory, 1/2 sec with cam, 1/2 sec with gears and posi.
