Later model 305 heads?

When I went to the track this past week I meet this guy that had a good pair of 305 heads that he needed to sell. He was planning on using these heads on his 350 but he found some better ones. These are fully a ported and polished set with a valve job. They are also shaved down .020 and have brand new springs. The only problem is that they are from an 83 camaro and I was wondering if they would fit on my 91 rs?
And what do I have to drill or tap?

the center intake hole will be angled different but thats no big deal. You might need shims for you distributor sing the heads are shorter. Ask on the general tech board about putting on shaved heads.

If they are 416 casting heads and cheap you should take them. I trashed the swirl ports and got some 416s, ported em myself and the car screams

btw Later model denotes a newer car
like when you say "I have a late model camaro" that is the opposite of an early model camaro ie. like a '68

How much better are the 416 heads that Pablo is using than the swirlports? I have a set from an L69 that I could use. Does anyone know what size the combustion chambers are and what C/R they would give with stock LO3 pistons?

Try to find a pair of 081's same as 416's but center bolt valve covers.
They should be 9:03 to 1 on a stock "305"
They were the TPI heads on '91-92's 58cc's.

Yeah I figured that the TPI heads would be like that. I just don't have a set unless I take the ones from my daughters Trans Am. LOL

I'm still unsure what heads I would like to try. The TPI or L69 heads with an RPM intake is what the Am Sedan racers run and they make upwards of 330 HP with no porting. I like Dyno Don's suggestion of the TPI's keeping the compression at 9.3:1.

Does anyone on here run the TPI heads? Will they respond to regular porting? And are the tpi's and the 416's the same 58cc chamber size? The 416's are the one's Pablo's running. I keep debating this because I would like to install an RPM intake for regular heads that I can get cheap and keep my Vortec's for the LO5 block build up in the future. Thank's for any replys.

Pablo for sure didn't have the TPI ones. I think he had the 305 H.O. ones. Was the 305 H.O. the L69?

Tas, yes the L69 was the 305HO. If the valve covers and the middle intake bolts are the only differance I say port them and get some of the cool GMPP's cast alum. valve covers for them. I'm getting tired of the centerbolt covers. See ya.

I agree with dyno don, the 081's are like slightly improved versions of the 416's, They have better plug placement and the centerbolt covers are a plus. Get whichever you can find cheapest though (taking into account youll need new valve covers with the older ones) the 416's serve me well but they definately need a crap load of work with a grinder or dremel because of the loads of casting flash they have

Thanks for the replys. I have got to agree with you about the valve covers after looking at some of the oil running out of the old style's that I have looked at lately.

You can "unswirl" the valve bowls fairly easily, and with good results if the cam selection is correct. The rest of the port areas will need some blending as well, but if you have a die grinder, carbide burr, and some time, you can make them flow.
