Open Air Filter IAT?

Ok i know this is going to sound like a stupid question but how do you remove the IAT sensor from the original air cleaner system to put in an open air cleaner. I dont want to tear it out or anything since ill probley have to put the old one back on when i have to get it smoged. Also since im on the topic of air filters and smog will an open air filter effect my smog i live in California and i know there known for having hard smog laws. I searched and downloaded that instruction guide but it just says remove IAT from old air cleaner but idk how and i dont want to break it just in case it is an expensive part.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

ok to remove the iat from the old cleaner--when you look on the inside of the cleaner at the sensor there should be a metal ring around it, just take that off and pull the sensor down. new they are 20 at advance auto parts, or free at the junkyard if you are sneaky

and an open element should not affect smog. hope this helps you, i can take a pic of what i am talking about with the sensor if you need it, let me know.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

Won't affect smog BUT you need the original air cleaner in order to pass the visual part of the smog check. It has to do with the thermac system, you know all those fancy valves, lines and the heat riser tube (from the exhaust manifold) on the original air cleaners.

here is a pic for you. the metal piece is the ring i was talking about. the little prong thing on the front, you have to bend that out and the sensor should pull right out.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

Thanks for the picture one more question. Is an open element filter worth the trouble. Like is it a gain i will notice or is it just better for the engine. My car right now is all stock though over the summer i plan on installing a new exaust system. Just wondering if its worth having to take off when i have to smog it.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

the 14x3 will flow more air, might not be a big gain now, but once you start improving the motor it will help out

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

Hey i wanted to thank 91 camaro racer for the help. I got it installed but ended up taking it back cause my idle got rought when it was on and it was right on top of my coils. I did put something between it though while testing it out so nothing bad happened. Once i put my old filter back on my idle was normal again. Is this something common or anything?

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

first off i just want to say thank you to dekoy411--it is no problem, thats whey this forum is here so we can all help each other. i love working on my car and i love helping people so they can get better at working on theres!!

it could be taking the voltage out of the wire so less went to the plug, most people just put a little bit of cardboard or something so they don't rub each other.

also how long did you run it when it was rough? it could be that the computer might just need to "learn" a little since it has more air? just an idea.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

I drove around with it for about an hour or so on and off. It only was rough when i was stopped and it was in drive. When in neutral it didn't idle rough which i thought was odd.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

At 500 or a little above 500. My rpm stayed the same with my stock air filter though it didn't idle rough at all. I thought maybe it was idling low but the number was the same so idk.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

I just noticed something from reading other topics about it and i realized that i forgot to plug that vacuum line i'm wondering if that would make the difference. Plus does the elite series air filter fit in with out touching the coils and does it still screw in with out a problem that seemed to be the problem i had with the other filter i had too.

Re: Open Air Filter IAT?

yeah leaving a vacum connection unpluged will really throw off your idle, not sure about the air filter
