Stock TBI intake

Are they all the same? Obviously the ones for caprices are differant where the distributor mounts, but is that the only differance?

Where/when does a stock or "gasket matched" TBI intake run out of breath? How much power can they support?

Re: Stock TBI intake

Last time I checked the dissy was mounted the same in every small block chevy made up untill the LT-1.....which didn't have one.

The stock intake has been used on motors up to 300hp (ask fast355) this doesn't mean that it isn't restricting power. I would only look to the intake untill you've done the full exhuast, cam, and tuning. Only then does it become cost effective.

Re: Stock TBI intake

The 91-93 caprice used a special shorter distributer with a bigger opening in the intake.

Huh.....Learn somethin new everyday.

If you have the room, which I think you do, I would run a performer RPM. Just can't beat it for a street engine.

Re: Stock TBI intake

They are not shorter - but the top flange has a larger diameter on B-body. This was done to allow for in car removal. I'll post pics later on.

I think there is a length difference.... but I haven't measured them myself. The mounting flange is the more obvious difference.

Here are the threads on the flange issue:

Re: Stock TBI intake

Kdorolt

I guess I was wrong . I have the following three distributors.

1103460 'Pulled from 86 camaro LG4 CCC Standard Hat
1103952 'Pulled from 89 TBI LO3 Camaro
1103852 'Pulled 91 305 B-Body

Top collar diameter (distro shaft to intake manifold):
'3460 1.25"
'3952 1.25"
'3852 2.10"

Distance from top collar bottom flange to top block sleeve (there are two):
'3460 4.47"
'3952 4.47"
'3852 4.30"

It appear as B-Body intake manifold distributor through flange is thinner and wider to make distributor removal easier. One way to make sure is to measure intake manifold flange height. I'll post photos tonight explaining my dimensions.

Re: Stock TBI intake

As you can imagine it kinda makes it a PITA for us 91-93 B-body guys. Nobody makes an aftermarket intake thats works with this distributor. The other type will work but you wont be able to remove it without pulling the intake.

Then why not just bore out the manifold to the B-body specs?? Removal of material is easy and free(usually), just kills the resale value. Maybe I'm way off base, but from what I gather, its just a larger mounting flange on the B-dizzy.

Re: Stock TBI intake

Could you just use a b-body intake with a b-body distributor or a f-body intake with a f-body distributor in either vehicle? I maybe be wrong, but didn't sbc trucks of the same era use the b-body distributor too?

Re: Stock TBI intake

It is possible, but you will need to CNC intake manifold - to precisely locate the center line of existing distributor through hole. Bottom and top sleeves bore centerlines have to align, or otherwise distributor will never sit straight in.
Also, you will have to take out 170 mills of top side of intake manifold flange so that distributor can sit lower. I do not know if standard intake manifold flange has that much meat to take out.
