Steady stream of fuel.....

My 305 TBI died on me a few nights ago and won't restart. Take the air cleaner off and when I crank it, it WILL actually restart for a few seconds then dies. During the short run period, there is a steady streamo f fuel coming out of BOTH injectors. It runs that way for a second or two then quits and the engine dies. The engine sputters and there is a 'hissing/sucking' sound the whole time.

ANYONE have ideas? I bought a TBI rebuild and an FPR rebuild kit. Haven't used them yet......

My thinking (tell me if I'm wrong... ) is that MAYBE the FPR is not working properly. Hence the steady stream of fuel from both injectors.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

The hissing is the IAC being open all the way to prevent the engine from stalling due to too much fuel (from the sound of it).

It could be leaking. Dry the bores and undersides of the injectors completly and turn the key to the on position to prime the pump, but dont start the motor. If there is fuel pouring out, then an o-ring has blown, but this seems unlikely that two would go out at the same time. Still worth checking as its the easiest thing to check.

After that, look closely at the MAP sensor and the line leading to it. It could have come off or split, cuasing the MAP to report high. That will cause an immediate flood sometimes. Same thing with the CTS. That will also cause a flood if the sensor is bad.

Have you done any work to the TBI itself so far?

nothing as yet.

I bought a TBI rebuild kit and a FPR rebuild kit earlier today. Was going to try those first.....

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) is the sensor on your intake manifold next to the thermostat housing. If it goes bad it can give the computer a reading of -40* or something crazy like that and the computer will think it's that cold and dump fuel in accordingly. It's happened to me before.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

ahhhh thanks...

Looking in the manual, it shows the MAP on the firewall or at least it appears to be there. Where exactly is it?

On the top of the firewall on teh passenger side. Youll see it sitting there on a bracket. Its a rectangular black box with a vacuum hose and a 3 pin connector.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

Saw that and thought it might be it.....thanks again.

Checked all of the lines (vacuum, etc) and they all appeared good. Did not find any cracks in them and all were secure. Guess I'll start my rebuild.

Anyone have any experience with AIS one of the sponsors? Thinking about sending my injectors to them for a rebuild.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

My recent problem was a cracked hose that connects the fuel pump to the pick-up in the tank. I could get it to run a bit, then it would stall out. If you do not have a fp gauge, get a can of starting fluid to see if you can get the car to run that way. That may also tell you if the ECM is telling the injectors to cut-off because of some sensor faulting.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

OK...so I finally got around to working on this.

Rebuilt thew TBI with a kit, cleaned it, new gaskets, o-rings, etc etc...

Had the injectors cleaned by AIS (one of the sponsors....GREAT service)

Put it all back together and tried to crank it. Heard a pop (almost like a back fire) then when I tried it again, the starter was giving it a rat-a-tat-tat-tat sound like it was TRYING to kick in but just didn;t have enough voltage from the battery to fully engage. Checked battery level and it was OK.

Too hot to do much with it for a week or two as it is sitting on the driveway on jack stands (Texas 100 degrees )

Finally took the starter off and saw that the housing was cracked. So, when starter tried to engage, it couldn't pull in far enough to mesh with the flywheel.

Replaced the starter and tried it again....still doing the same thing. Would run roughly for a few seconds then die.

Replaced the coolant temp sensor....still not right.

I do have a question in here....

Should BOTH injectors have the samew numbers on them? I mean there isn't like a secondary and a primary injector is there? Mine have differnet numbers seems like one was a 6097 and the other a 6098 or sumn like that would have to pull them back out to verify. Just know they aere different numbers.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

WTF, you are having the same problem as me. I wonder if it could be bad gas with a lot of water or sumthing. I changed my fuel filter and it still does exactly what urs id doing. This sucks.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

don;t think it's fuel. was running fine off and on when I would take it out of the garage...for several months. Different length trips from 1/4 mile to 30 miles or more. Then this one night I took it to a local GTG and it died. Over 3/4 tank of gas.

O, well do you think mine could be the gas. Mine actually did it once I my car sat overnite right after I had filled it to Full. I am going to Siphon it tomarrow and put some fresh premium and maybe some sea foam and see what happens.

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

The injectors should have the same part number as it is not a primary/ secondary system. The injectors are referenced off the ignition module, something to have tested.

Stays running with carb cleaner correct?

Re: Steady stream of fuel.....

Haven't tried carb cleaner. It's getting fuel and it is actually a spray now after getting injectors cleaned. Runs a little bit then dies....spray stops when engine shuts off.
