Will this work?
Hey guys, I just had an idea and I'm looking for feedback.
In an attempt to setup your fueing, would it be possible to temporarilly remove the stock distributor and temporarilly install an HEI in its place? I'm thinking that it would making tuning fuel a lot easier because you wouldn't be concerned if your ecm timing curve was off...(which mine is) lessening the chance of pre ignition, detonation ect. Then once you got your fuel right you could re-install your ecm distributor and program your curve right.
Would this work? or would the ecm see that "theres no distributor" and not allow it to run?
Suggestions?

Swapping a TBI to HEI has been done, time and time again. Especially the off-road guys. You need to run the tach signal into the factory wiring harness. That is input the tach signal from the HEI, into the EST High Input into the ECM. It should run, but will immediately throw an EST system failure code.
I really don't see any benifit to it, I ALWAYS put a HEI like timing table togather for my TBI engines, since the stock timing table sucks so badly. When you put a standard HEI in it, you also eliminate the Knock sensor.
EDIT- The reason you need the Tach signal (AKA Distributer Reference Pulse) is for the injectors to pulse. Without a reference pulse, the ECM will not pulse the injectors, nor will it turn on the fuel pump.

Fast, The only reason I'm actually thinking about it is my lack of knowledge of "setting up a correct table" I know its probably not all that hard to do but I just haven't put in the time yet. I guess because I have never had to...I've always used HEI so I never had to deal with it...until now. I appreciate your quick reply and I'll get that info on those injectors asap.
