HELP, IS THIS SAFE????

A guy on here told me I could just take out my air filter, put in one that is the same diameter but 1 or 2 inches taller, and flip over the cover on my air cleaner, and then tighten it upside down, so about an inch of the air filter is still visible. He said it gave him a significant increase in acceleration, but is that safe?

Re: HELP, IS THIS SAFE????

so some of the filter should be visible, and the top will not be totally sealed down?

Re: HELP, IS THIS SAFE????

yeah, that is an old hot rodding trick a lot of people used to do , its going to increase the air flow, it isnt going to hurt anything.

Re: HELP, IS THIS SAFE????

it is NOT going to give you huge gains though. The stock air cleaner is also a muffler of sound. You'll hear more, and maybe get more air, but you wont go much faster. Dont we all wish it was that simple...

Re: HELP, IS THIS SAFE????

Was it me that told you this? I have done it on my car, and it works great. I will try and get some pics, but all i have is my cell phone for a camera.

On my firebird, the hood will not hit the air cleaner but the insulation will. And when you slam the gears, the lid will JUST BARELY rub the hood, to the point where it cut out a section of the insulation. But no biggie, I have had it like this for 5k miles now and the air cleaner stud is fine. Also, though, you loose the thermac valve. I drove all the way back to NH tonight and the car never warmed up over 100 miles, but that could be also a stuck thermostat on my part.

Finally, the cost/benefit it great. It makes a *** dyno difference in the upper RPM's, but just barely. The coolest thing is the noise it makes. Sounds like a regular LO3 cruising, but near WOT when it hits Power Enrichment, it sounds like a big 4bbl with the mechanical secondaries slamming home!

[edit] btw, if you are gonna race, just a short distance, you can flip the lid upside down without a taller filter. It wont be as high, but you will get a 1/4 inch of un-filtered cold air to race with. Then just flip it back up regular after the race. However, if your motor sucks in a rock or something and blows up it's not my fault

Where is the cold air going to be coming from? The way you guys are talking about doing it, it will get hot air from under the hood.

You get your power from being able to inhale more airflow. The stock setup sucks threw a very small portion of the air cleaner (know as the snorkel)

Best thing to do is just get an open element air cleaner with a good high flow filter.

I seen a huge gain at the track with the lid off/on 4/10's of a gain with it off. But this was with cam, and headers.

You can, but you really dont need to. I left them on just because if I ever want to convert back I can buy a stock filter, and flip the lid right back. Especially, I wouldnt cut the snorkel off that is a waste of a good aircleaner housing.
