Re: how to run the EGR in a closed loop
egr has little to do with fuel mixture just so you know. it doesn't richen or lean the engine out any. it simply uses exhaust gas to dilute the incoming intake charge and cool the combustion chamber and keep detonation down as well as burn any fuel that might have made it through the first time.

Re: how to run the EGR in a closed loop
There is 2 ways gas can burn. It can Deflagrate, which is like if you lit off a bucket of gas. It wont explode, it will just burn untill it works its way all the way through the fuel.
Detonation is when something explodes. Basically, all the fuel in the combustion chamber would explode all at once (imagine dynamite).
I believe they call pre-ignition "knock" and detonation "ping"
Somebody correct me if I am wrong, thanks.

Re: how to run the EGR in a closed loop
It's a little more complicated than that, but detonation or ping happens when the mixture burns earlier than it should, for a variety of reasons.

Re: how to run the EGR in a closed loop
witch could cause your crank to bend buy not being at top dead center and trying to force it the opposite direction? but at the end of it it would be bad all togeather rite?
so should i keep the egr or no because i also have the 305ci heads on but have ported and polished my self and have herd they too well cause detonation and timeing problems, but i am going to get l31 vortec heads ported n pollished too but not to soon so,
and thanks for the help guys

Re: how to run the EGR in a closed loop
Personally, I would keep the EGR. There is no reason to really delete it, unless you get an intake manifold that doesent support it. It helps the motor too I heard.
Maybe if your car is knocking and pinging, you could try to retard your timing a little. Mine was knocking really bad under load, so I retarded it back to 0* base timing, and that helped alot. It still knocks alot, but only when there is high-load at low RPM (like slipping the clutch, or trying to climb a steep hill in 4th gear)

You could toss that garbage old intake in the trash, to start.

oh I didnt read the part about the 305 heads on a 350. I guess you could find some heads with a bigger chamber, like 76cc or something.

Even if it's brand new it's still an old, outdated design.

The stock intake is better than the intake you are talking about.
