Just curious if anyone has tried this cold air intake on their Firebird?

I have an LO3 motor and since you can't find many cold air kits for these cars, I could not resist investing the $50 to see if it would work on the bird.

After removing the air cleaner and air cleaner spacer, The body dropped right on and did not interfere with anything. I closed the hood and have plenty of clearance under the hood.
I drilled the side to accomodate the air temp sensor and put an inline filter from the breather to accomodate the air cleaner mounted filter on the original breather. When turned properly, it makes a direct shot to the area where the vapor canister resides. I had to add a little length to the intake tube and create a turn down for the filter.

All in all, it was pretty easy to modify. I love the sound of the intake as you mash the throttle. Driveability was not hurt and with the air cleaner body being smaller, it doesn't get heat soaked like I thought it would. Soon as I get it completely finished, I'll get a couple of pics posted.

 

There are a couple members with them here. I have contimplated one, and I might still get one, but I would rather have dual cone filters. Could you, by any chance, measure the diameter of the tube? Because I would like to fab something up like, single 4 inch pipe off the carb hat, and then dual 3" pipe off a y-pipe, into 2 cone filters for minimal resistance.

i haver that exact set up from ebay and it fit just fine. however i have a strut tower brace so i switched out the tube and used a chrome flex tube from the local parts store.

 

Hey there, the hat measures 3 1/2". Then you have the coupler. The intake tube to the filter measures 3 1/4".

Did you notice any power gains over the stock aircleaner?

 

LOL!! I got exactly what I paid for. I would have to say that it breathes a little more freely. I would say a little gain but definitely not more than 10 HP. Been working on new suspension so when that gets completed, back to the dyno she goes and I will be able to tell you how much the gain was. Sometime in the next 60 days.

 

That's exactly what I've been kicking around for a carb car.....although I plan on extending it around in front of the radiator. Nothing a tape measure, dremel, sharpie, and a little bit of motivation and bud light can't negotiate.

I tried a spectre dual snorkel (4"), and I can't even shut the hood with just the plenum mounted. Should work w/ a cowl hood, but I like sleepers myself.

Engine_Store on ebay sells a DIY cold air kit. I bought the low profile(2.25 ich) alum carb bonnet along with 4 inch dia (3 inch available) polished tube in various lenghts 3-4-6 and 22-45-60-90 deg bends with connectors. Also offerred is a adapter to secure the tube and aircleaner to fender or whatever(radiator shroud). On end you can buy their cone air filter in various sizes or just go Summit and buy any KN of you choice. 100's of sizes/shapes. I plan to route it to area low and next to radiator to air cleaner if I can manage that.

Tony, you would have a better result if you could fit a right side hat, or get the air from the right. Because injector pod is obstucting and reducing the air flow, tremendously vs right side hat turned to the left or yours sucking air from the right.

This is the one I am using. Air will enter from front of TBI pod no obstruction by pod. Will route to side of radiator shroud/low. Hopefully enough room to secure in ideal location.

here's what i had on mine for a while. fit was perfect and there was a seat of the pants improvement. but it wouldn't fit when i installed my STB.

 

You couldn't pay me enough to put that UGLY SOB on my car. The only way I'd even consider it would be if someone made a set up that would work with the STB and use something like the old TPI setup we use to use back in the day. Some of us who have been here a while will know what i'm talking about.

 

what do you do with all the misc. stuff attached to the stock intake assembly?

 

Mine is polished and shiny! I will post photos of completed job. May have to degrade to 3.00 inch pipe?

 

the small vacume line for the THERMAC valve can be removed because it is not used, then plug the vacume port an the TBI where it was attached. the IAT sensor which plugs into the bottom of the air cleaner fit right into a port which was on the side of the new assembly. and the PCV tube which goes to the air cleaner can be removed and replaced with a valve cover breather. the attached pic shows the plugged THERMAC port, and the IAT sensor. i know this setup doesn't look perfectly at home on a Camaro, but it does one important task. it enables you to remove the air cleaner spacer thus unshrouding the throttle bores, which allows air to flow in around the bottom of the injector pods rather than squeezing around them from the top.
PS: don't pay attention to the dates on the pics, the battery on my camera died and it apparently time warped back to 1988.

 

Can you buy that piece separate from Procharger or from a vendor? I would like to get my hands on one of those.

Ive got the exact setup you are talking about...A TPI Air pickup going into the TBI breather case...True ram air, and cold air at the same time....Also made aluminum duct work where the fog lights go, to scoop the cool air in.....LOVE IT...

When I click on the link to the cold air kit that this thread was started about, it comes up as an 88-95 CHEVY TRUCK SUBURBAN TAHOE COLD AIR INTAKE. Has the link changed or are you using the truck cold air kit? If so, did it fit right on your 305 TBI? I don't see any camaro kits on the website.

 

I am using th ecold air intake for the Chevy Tahoe. The hat works fine and fits well under the hood. You may have to be a little creative to make the air temp sensor fit and use a longer tube for the intake to the filter portion of it. I added a piece of aluminum to mine to make the reach to where I wanted the filter to fit.

that is a very good point! my old set up had to have the spacer since flat base interferred with the throttle shaft/cable attachment.

 

I thougt it looked a little short. Did you weld the piece of aluminum tubing in? Where did you end up routing it to?

 

I've fitted this to work in my maro. had to notch the back for the distributor and take a little of the top of the accelerator linkage, but at 6" inlet, she ought to breath a little better.

I will, I'm going to work on it this weekend... it's at a friends house--i've put some much stuff on it... I said to heL with a little bit here and there and did a whole lot at once to it. The list is long... but the CAI even fits under the edelbrock strut tower brace. Get a pic this weekend, maybe even friday. We've got the rearend jacked up 4' to work on the rear and gas tank, driveshaft and torque arm. LCA's and panhard bar.

He sent me the exact same setup as the picture of the '69. that was for "illustration purposes only." Didnt have to remove the purge canister or relocate the washer reservoir either===thought we might, but didnt. I'm anxious to get it back on the road:

.......All new front end, poly bushings; new struts/shocks, 1" eibach drop, new front brakes/rotors and bearings/seals; wonderbar; oversized front sway bar; dual electric radiator fan conversion; 16" OEM iroc Rims/Tires; Aluminum driveshaft; 4th gen rearend swap from 2000 transAm wtih the Zexel Rear and 3.42 (outta a 6spd)... still have the full edelbrock TES exhaust to put on, and subframe connectors, torque arm and panhard rod and lower control arms with reloc. brackets to put on after we finish putting the gas tank back in with new pump 255lph walbro.

whole list of stuff.... setting it up for a ZZ4 crate motor here in SEVERAL years, when I save up the loot.


I"ll get pics up ASAP. It wont be the same $1800 project car it used to be, that's for sure.... It will be IROC ready.. haha. let me know what you think over the weekend w/the pics.

i can feel an improvment but not much... i think it looks cleaner anyhow.... it fits just fine under the hood

Is that the Spectre single inlet snorkel? Std height or low profile? How is your hood clearance if it's pointed towards the fenders?

 

thanks! yes it is spectre.... the 4" single plenum... i havent tried but i think clearance would be the same if facing any other direction.... its std height.... after i get off ill move it around a bit

 

Good- I'm curious to see. When I tried the dual 4" plenum, it was not going to fit. I'm worried that when I install my Weiand Stealth (older model, clears stock hood), between that, my L69 dual snorkel, and STB, I'm going to have some fitment issues, so keeping something similar to yours open as a 'Plan B'.

Seems like it always "looks good on paper" LOL.

 

My carb bonnet was purchased EBay. I think it was a Spectre. they offer 2 inch and a 4 inch. 4 inch stands too high above the injs. The 2 inch needed 2 @ .50 inch alum spacers to clear inj pod. It cleared by about .125 inch and cleared my hood barely.

 

would theses work on carb motors?

 

The style CAI in this photo is as close to earning the name "Cold Air Intake" that I have ever seen.
