EGR solenoid question

Ok, first off, just want to say thanks to everyone on these forums, you've all been really helpful with all the problems I've had on my car. Most the time I don't even have to ask.. I just do a quick search and come across the answer to my question.

Ok, so here's the deal. I'm getting my car ready to be smogged, and I'm replacing the EGR valve with an original from the dealer. The old one is one of those cheapies from autozone and it leaks. So I was checking out the egr solenoid and pulled the vacuum line off of the egr valve. When I rev the engine up somewhere around 1.5k-2k rpm I believe it is, the solenoid will pull vacuum on that line for just a second, then it will stop. Here's the question.. Is the solenoid supposed to continue to pull vacuum at that rpm as long as the rpm's stay there? Or is it supposed to just pull vacuum for a second and stop like it's doing?

I started wondering about this the other day when I would rev the engine and was looking down at the EGR valve. I could see the valve kind of bounce open and closed, but it would never stay open. Just wondering exactly how this is supposed to work.

Oh, it's on a 5.0 TBI engine. Thanks in advance everyone.

Re: EGR solenoid question

The solenoid blocks the vacume line that goes to the EGR valve when: The engine is idling or below a certain RPM, at wide open throttle, and before the engine heats up. The computer will take a preasure reading of the intake manifold then open the EGR valve, witch is supposed to decrease the vacume in the intake manifold, then take a second reading and if the preasure didn't change then it will throw a code. The way I see it if its not throwing a code and its not leaking its probably working fine.
