this is what i did on my old 92 rs. found a tbi cadillac intake piece to go directly over the tbi. after that find a tpi engine or 2.8/3.1 car in a salvage yard and get the intake piping and the bracket it attaches to in the bumper. therers some baffles that you can cut out too. get 2 k&n drop in filters and you're set. this is just one of many options, but i found this rather cost-effective since i already had the stuff from parting out my old z.

as for what performs better? i never got any dyno results; however, the open element has good flow, but it is sucking in hot air from under the hood.

don't forget to read the stickies, especially the free tbi mods. welcome to the forum

damn i really miss my 3rd gen.

Thanks alot i already read the stickies i just wanted a personal opinion on it from others.. i did know the open element sucks in hot air from the engine under the hood so i figured a custom ram air would be alot better for preformance sence it would be getting freash cool air.

Re: open element or Ram air? TBI

I recently installed a open air element to see how it performed. As for power increase, I could feel nothing. Sound was good, like a 4 bbl. Nice and throaty. Water temp went up a few degrees, due to the hot air being sucked in. Gas mileage dropped, I guess due to the hotter air charge. Final result... I took it off. I didn't like how close it sat to the coil, and the drop in mileage, and rise in temp, was not worth it to me. I've been working on a set of scoops for the hood, and when they're finished, I they they'll show a bigger increase in power, and a much cooler charge. I recommend the ram air.

Re: open element or Ram air? TBI

I have a 92 with a L03 and T5 but I have long tube headers and a full 3.5 catback with flomaster muffler and I noticed a difference when I went to open air. Before the change it was hard to burn out or break the rear loose with a clutch kick but after it would do it without trying. The great thing is I didn't loose any mpg and im on a 187k original engine and its still running strong.

Re: open element or Ram air? TBI

I'm in the middle of a Ram air setup. Took L69 air cleaner, cut the bottom off and riveted on the Mr. gasket non-drop base. Then filled the gaps with a gasket sealer.

just need the hoses and scoops.

It's kinda a long process... also had to get some hoses with 90* ends for the heater hoses. Than more for moving the air divertor.

I felt a difference even without the hoses connected
