How should a good RS feel?
Ok, My 91 RS has 140K mi on it and I only got it a few months ago. I think it runs pretty good, but I don't know how these cars should feel when they are tuned right. I have 3.23 gears with a limited slip and I can spin out if I crank the wheel and get on it, but I can't spin the tires on a dry road from a standstill while keeping the wheel straight. I have pretty good pickup after I get moving butno wheel spin from a standstill. Obviously its not the wheelspin itself I'm interested in, but I think its a decent way to describe what the throttle response feels like.
Is this normal for these cars? I had an 88 V6 oldsmobile that would spin the tires with ease, so I'm shocked that this camaro won't.

I agree with billybird. Mine spins like crazy. And its bone stock. Rebuild that baby or drop in a 350. Then she'll spin for ya.

Re: How should a good RS feel?
So you definitely would expect a stock RS, auto tranny to be able to light the tires, from a standstill, with the wheel straight on a dry road? I thought surely any V8 camaro should.
When I went to 3.23 I added the limited slip. Would that be enough to keep it from spinning? It didn't really burnout before either with teh 2.73 open.
----------
I just noticed you have a 4.11. Obviously that helps, but I had a 4 .11 for a while and it still only spun a little. I wouldn't call it a burnout.

With an auto tranny, you gotta powerbrake it to get the tires smoking.

Ok, that sounds exactly like mine. Only spins with the brake or with the wheel turned.

Re: How should a good RS feel?
sounds like you could seriously benefit from a good tune-up, definately a seafoam treatment or two, especially with 140k miles on it.
fwiw my car, with 2.73 open gears and a tiny 215 street tire, will spin its one tire fryer from a stop if i just stomp it. and itll spin through most of first if i stall it up any.

I just did air filter, breather, cap, rotor, wires, plugs and timing. Maybe the limited slip gives just enough extra traction to keep these cars from wanting to burn out. It runs smooth and quiet and seem strong once its moving.

Re: How should a good RS feel?
ive got all the bolt ons. headers, exhaust, k&n, smog pump delete, no cat, etc. and with my 3.42's and posi it will squall the tires on a cool day if i just stomp on it from a stand still but no smoke or drivin sideways unless i brake stand it then ittl spin through first.
yours sounds pretty typical of a 305 theres not much there haha. forget the bolt ons on the 305 your just wastin time and money get a decent 350 and go with that... just try to stay under 380 ft/lbs or youre gonna start breakin everything behind it.
good luck

Re: How should a good RS feel?
I have a 305 (160k miles on the clock) with an auto in my firebird and an open dif in the back. I can spin that one tire like crazy just by stepping on it. That's on dry pavement going straight ahead. It'll spin the tires in first and then chirp when the tranny shifts into 2nd. Only real mod I did to it was throw on an open element, it's bone stock other than that.

I do agree my 4:11 does help alot. Last night I did a 20 footer on my road. I couldve went longer but I just got those tires and wanna keep them a little longer. It was awsome though.

Re: How should a good RS feel?
Suspension condition could play a role in tire spin....my cousins thirdgen is slower than mine but he'll whoop me in any burnout contest because he can't hook up for **** with his 156k mile suspension. I have trouble doing anything other than a quick screech unless I do a brake stand with LCARBs, poly bushings, tubular arms, koni's, etc etc.

Re: How should a good RS feel?
Hmmm...that's interesting because my suspension is in terrible shape. Front and rear struts are original. bushings cracked and rotted. I will probably spend most of next weekend working on it.
Whats more, I realized that my car doesn't have the original engine in it. It has a 350 truck engine with the original TBI unit from my car. So not even a chirp with my 350.
I see you have a 350 TBI. What all have you done to it?

Re: How should a good RS feel?
What shape are your tires? With stock suspension in bad shape and a 350 TBI you should be able to shred both tires right off, these things are torque monsters.
It's an L05 much like what you've got, stock long block. I've got SLP headers, custom 3" mandrel bent exhaust, full suspension/front end rebuild with poly bushings, cop car injectors, EBL controlled with a home brewed from scratch chip tune.
How do you know it's a 350? If it still the stock 305 chip tune?

As far as I know it is running on the original 305 tune. Did you tune yours yourself? I need to get a baseline somehow. Don't know anything about tuning, and I have too many other things to fix right now to try and learn, not to mention buy the equipment. I may just have to go to somebody like TBI chips and get one burned.
Do you know anything about the ESC (electronic spark control module)? I was having some timing probs and I got an SES light for the ESC. Did some research and I read that the ESC is different between the 305 and 350. As far as I know, everything (dizzy, comp, TBI unit, etc) besides the block and heads, is from my original L03, so I'm not sure which ESC to go with. Any idea?

My 160,000mi 305TBI with a T5 will smoke the right rear through two gears and bark in third, with no brake. It just has an open element, and MSD ignition parts. Oh, and hooker comp headers with 2.50 X-pipe crossed duals with Single Chamber FLO's.

Re: How should a good RS feel?
I friend of mine got under it and found the casting number, checked and said it was a 350. I'm gonna try and find the other stamp that tells me more info this weekend. Sounds like I may not be able to see it with the accessories mounted, though.

When I got the car, I wasn't sure if he already changed the PROM or if he left the 305 PROM on there, so, thinking that I'd be doing engine work in the future, I went ahead and ditched the whole ECM and bought an EBL. And yes I did tune it myself.
I'm not sure about the ESC. Maybe post up your block casting numbers from the bellhousing flange so we can see which block you have?

Re: How should a good RS feel?
Get under either valve cover and get the head casting number, post it here. That will tell you a good deal about the engine.

Re: How should a good RS feel?
Yes you need to remove the valve cover to see the head casting numbers. You're blind without knowing a bit about what you have, that's all I'm trying to accomplish with that.
Is ESC a different name for Ignition Module? GM Parts direct has the Ignition Module listed as same part number for 5.0 and 5.7 TBI and another one for 5.0 and 5.7 TPI. I honestly don't remember it being one of the things required for a 305 - 350 TBI swap. I could be very wrong though. I didn't do my swap, the previous owner did. Search the archives and see. You might need to grab an ESC for a 350 caprice or something, assuming you have an L05 and not some custom made 350.
