Is this right?
I'm gonna do the open element swap finally. I've read all the stickies and done searches but sometimes there is so much info on this site it leaves you head spinning. So I just wanna know if I've got it all right.
I'm looking at this
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
Flat base, 3 in filter height.
1. Should that fit under my stock hood?
2. Is that the right opening size-5 1/8 inch?
3. As for the IAT, I literally just cut a hole in the bottom of the new base and stick it in, just like on the original, right?
4. I remove the spacer ring for the flat base, right?
And I guess I'll have to check clearance for the plug/coil wires on the back and maybe add some insulating material.
Anything I'm missing here? Thanks.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. No, you leave that spacer that comes stock on your throttle body on, new filter slips onto it.
And yes, that's the right filter, it clears everything. Your gonna want to pull off the rubber vaccuum hose that runs to the stock filter and plug up the hole to prevent any vaccuum leak.

Re: Is this right?
Well, it turns out that the 3 inch flat base doesn't fit under my hood. Im about to order another one. Just trying to decide whether to go to a shorter element or go with the drop base. I guess it come down to max airflow versus unshrouding the throttle bore. I think Im leaning toward the 3 inch drop base. Suggestions?

Re: Is this right?
I picked up a 3" drop base from Edelbrock.. I'm pretty happy with it.
Alot of people were telling me they had trouble with it rubbing some wires going to the coil, I didn't have any issues with that though. It cleared everything great.

Re: Is this right?
Ive got the same edelbrock drop base one, the housing did touch some wires so I just wrapped them with electrical tape and just check them every once in a while. Other than that no probelms. I do have to push down pretty hard to get the threads for the stud to stick above the cover so i can put the wingnut on though.

Re: Is this right?
I have decided to go with the 2 inch flat base to unshroud the bores and avoid the wire chafing issues. Its .5 inch lower than the 3 inch drop base. Hopefully I wont have any problems with the wing nut. I have seen several people mention buying a longer stud or a stud extender, but I can't find one. called Jegs and they don't know what I'm talking about. Anybody point me in the right direction?

Re: Is this right?
thats hard to believe that it wouldnt fit your camaro. they dont have quite as much slope to the hood as the firebirds, which is what my open element is on.
as far as the stud extension, just go to your nearest advance, autozone, oreilly, etc and look for a Mr. Gasket stud kit. they usually come with a 6 inch stud and a stud extender and a wing nut. its like 5 bucks or something like that. not too bad of a price.

14"x3" is a big filter for a 230hp engine and will give you no gains over a 10"x3".

Re: Is this right?
The 14 inch diameter is not a prob, the height is. I also want to leave some potential to support future mods, so I'm gonna stick with the 14 inch.
The 2 inch flat base fliter is 2.18 high, .5 shorter than the 3 inch drop base.
Like you said a 230 horse motor doesn't need an enormous filter so I think 2 in flat will be a good choice-adequate airflow, and unshrouding the throttle bores. Plus, the flat base seems to clear the coil wire better. I'llupdate after I get teh filter on Wed.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Is this right?
Here's the update I promised. I installed this filter today:
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/50020...751908%7C11349
It fits under the hood, and it sounds cool. The car definitely sounds different at idle and on the road. At cruise it is actually quieter and I swear the car runs noticeably smoother, especially at idle.
The car is definitely faster, the top end power doesn't drop off as hard and it actually shifts smoother and quicker. The engine used to sound and feel like it was straining at WOT, even though it was pulling strong. Now it sounds a lot healthier. I think the shifts are smoother and quicker because it isn't straining as hard at the shift point.
We all know The TBI aircleaner was too small for the 305 to begin with, and I know the trucks had taller filters, so my guess is that putting the L03 intake on a 350 was severely limiting its breathing, to the point of actually making the engine run poorly.
The jeg's filter looks great too, all chrome, with a K&N style element. I don't know why anybody is paying $70 or more for some of the air cleaners sold with paper elements. This one was 34.99.
----------
I was also able to use the stock air cleaner stud.
