I drive a 92 camaro RS with a 305 TBI. It has about 190,000 miles on it. Everything under the hood right now is stock and im probably not even pushing 200 HP. I was wondering what would be the best way to add an extra hundred HP? What is the best way to get higher compression? I was thinking maybe a top end rebuild and cold air intake....im not sure though. i have about 1500 dollars to put under the hood, Any suggestions????
Thanks!
Thanks!

190,000 miles??? Honestly, I would find a good LT1(complete), tranny, and ECU and just do the swap. 1,500 should be able to get you there.....

with that budget, look into a budget turbo build...or nitrous.

way to many miles on that engine. 1500 bucks is going to be hard to get you another 300hp. id say buy a 350, nothign special, just something with under 70,000 miles or so. you can get a 350 for about $400 bucks. buy some decent flowing heads $500 bucks, good flowing intake $250, a good cam $150 and some headers $200. theres 1500 bucks and you maybe got 270 hp or so. spend a couple hundred more on an exhaust and let that engine breathe!! thats not including other things you NEED for the enigne, new plug wires, new plugs, new oil and filter, etc.
also spend 20 bucks on an open element air cleaner. thatll help to. if your sticking with TBI it may be tougher to get there. a carb is a lot easier IMO. no computer controlled stuff, stupid simple. but if you go carb, you need to spend 250 on a new carb and 100 on a dizzy. if you get the high flowing intake then itll bolt up to the carb. and if you go carb you need to either get a AFPR or get a mechanical fuel pump. its all worth i think.

You didn't say if you intend to stay with TBI, but since you currently have that I'm going to move this over to the TBI gurus to help you out.
Good luck.
Good luck.

everyone needs more power!
But I would agree to do a complete engine swap, I am in the same boat with 190+K and I would like to have a new engine to feel better about it. But if not then get exhaust, intake, heads, and ultimate TBI mods and a cam.

I'm a bit farther up the creek than you guys, the odometer just rolled over to 220,000 yesterday, the engine runs fine though, I dunno whether it's been rebuilt or anything but it never has had an oil leak or anything like that in the year that I've owned it, I've overheated it multiple times last summer and it still runs very strong.Originally Posted by crytical point

But does anyone know where I can get this "400 dollar 350 under 70k miles"?
I'd love a 350 like that, and what I'd love even more would be a TBI fed one.
I'm in the middle of a header/exhaust system upgrade right now so that if my motor decides it's time to call it quits I can just swap everything over to a 350.

350's are a dime a dozen. i can find 350's on craigslist all day long. they usually go for around 600 bucks but sometimes you can find a 300-500 dollar engine.

awww man, I just checked craigslist, there are ALOT, dammit, if only i had seen these before I started on the exhaust in my car, ugh, they're really cheap, I saw a 350 bored over to a 383 TBI for 500 bucks.

Trust me, ditch the 305. I got rid of mine about a month ago. I picked up a complete decently built 355 with a freshly rebuilt WC T-5, wiring harness (I didn't need it but it doesn't hurt to have a spare), ECM, all accessories, TBI unit, EVERYTHING for $700. It was previously in a 92 RS so it was just a plug & play swap for me.
...Oh, and everything had less than 30K since the rebuild.
There are deals out there, you just have to jump on them when they pop up.
Hey wesrams1---I just saw that you're in Austin. We have a local thirdgen club in Austin. www.austinthirdgen.org We're having our monthly meet at Tilted Kilt in Round Rock Sunday at noon. Come by and check it out.
