im pretty sure that a gen1 block and LS1 heads will not match up, but lets see what the experts around here have to say

Re: ls1 heads on 5.0 tbi 1991

LSx heads are completely different and you wont get them to fit

Assuming you get past the bolt pattern/basket pattern differences, the valve train would be completely off

SBC valves are EIIEEIIE
LS1 valves are IEIEIEIE

Next go figure out how the coolant will run. SBC's use a coolant crossover built into their intake and specific ports on the heads for this
Swapping LT1 heads on requires rethinking this and either machine work or external coolant lines. You have no such luck for a LS1

Why don't you scratch the head swap for now and get some tuning equipment. Start off with some really basic stuff, like tune up the car first. Here's a list of the BEST way to start on an L03 based vehicle IMHO.

Tune it up. Get it running good.

Gears with a good posi, 3.42's auto 3.73's stick

Tuning Equipment. Get started early on a BONE STOCK motor so it's not such an ordeal in later on down the road. EBL FLASH and ZT-2 FTW!!!

Exhaust and an Intake. Popular choices are a Bored out (50mm) Edelbrock 3704 intake and Hooker 2055 headers. A good 3 inch catback is a must.

That's just for starters. It depends on how far you're willing to go. Here's a thread I wrote along with a couple others that should get you pointed in the right direction.

Re: ls1 heads on 5.0 tbi 1991

i would not ask about heads if i was not at that point. i have done the rear end 373 posi, got the headers and 3 inch all the way back.with a performer tbi intake now i am looking at some heads before i put it all on the car.
i thought it would be dumb to put on the intake and headers, just to take them back off when i get my new heads.

so now i would like to change the heads then i will do a bigger throttle body and get a new chip or have one burnt.

by the way the car runs great right now. just want faster

Sounds like your going to turn it in to fun set up, I would include a cam too.

I totally agree with Robertfrank on the tuning part, even more with your future mods. You really need to upgrade the ECM, you can download vinaldl for free and loock at the data to understand why.

Unfortunately heads are a major mod on these cars and changing them will necessitate ECM tuning. With the stock cam the stock heads or any other stock GM casting will suffice and minimal performance gains will be had. You are at a great spot right now to learn how to burn/tune your own chips. If you do not do that now any further mods added to your car will make it slower and harder to drive.

Sorry for trying to help, you didn't say what was already done to the car hence the added information. Before you put that intake on have it bored out to 50mm. and chamfer the holes on the inside for alittle better flow

At this point you are better off learning to tune believe me. I have almost every single bolt on you can think of and I haven't even really dug into the motor yet and I STILL need to tune this thing. I'm getting better at it but it is alot to learn but the benefits of this are awesome. Actually seeing and feeling the changes with each tune makes it worth it. With the EBL Flash and the ZT-2 even a total newb like me can get a grasp on this so don't be to intimdated by it.

In the thread I wrote I pretty much explained what the most popular heads for the L03 are so take your pick.
