Cam duration?
Ok, I have been looking through everything I can find about cam choice for a 305 with TBI. From what I have read I need to keep the cam LSA between 11-115. My question is...is there a maximum duration I should not go above? I will be getting a set of aftermarket heads to go along with the new cam. Compression will be 9.5-1 to 10-1. Any suggestions or tips? Thanks for your help.

Re: Cam duration?
I had a nice TBI 305 combo once, that I really loved. It was just over 10:1, with milled heads and flat-top pistons. Also, I had cut some #416 heads for 1.94" intake valves (I'm an automotive machinist, so I did the cutting) and ported and polished them. I used a COMP CAMS 12-388-4, I believe it was. It was hydraulic flat, not hyd. roller, with advertised duration of 252/260, duration at .050" of 206/212, lobe separation of 112, lift of .425/.440. This might not work at sea level, I was a couple thousand feet up, in Chattanooga, TN. You can go bigger with the cam, but I'm not the one to ask about that. I was using a 700R-4 and a 3.42:1 axle, and a B&M TorkMaster2400 converter, Edelbrock's intake, and crappy Hedman headers. Still, I had traction problems, but I wasn't using drag radials.

Re: Cam duration?
Thank you Atilla, I have read a lot of your posts and value what you have to say. I am going to go with a vortech head (which one I don't know yet), 10:1 compression as well, roller cam since it is an LO3, various suspension goodies also, and beef up the 10 bolt in it for now. I figure it should live ok behind what I will get out of the 305. 700R trans as well will get some attention to. I am going to keep it TBI and learn how to tune. Figure I can use it to help some of the Third genners around here! I will try posting this in another section to see if I get more hits. Thanks again.
