High idle

I may be having an issue with my 92 tbi. When I was driving, the idle was high when I was slowing down. It was not idling down as it should. The problem happened twice. It then ran normally. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

So, what your saying is that when slowing down, your RPM's do not drop like they should? What is it idling at? With any idle problems i would check the IAC and TPS to make sure they are good, then from there you just move down the list.

Yea, my rpm's didn't drop like they should. Not every time though. Maybe it won't do it again for awhile. I need to know what IAC and TPS stand for. I thought I knew everything... lol

Throttle Position sensor and Idle Air Control. They are the two sensors that plug into your TBI on the left side when looking at the engine from the front of the car. The TPS is black and plastic and held in by 2 or 3 screws. The IAC is a sensor that requires a large size socket to remove. Alot of fuys use brake or carb cleaner to clean up the IAC, and you use a voltmeter to test the TPS. Do a search youll find tons. But those are the two most common culprits of idle problems.

In reference to the problem, when it happens does the car accelerate? or do the RPMS drop slowly to a point and then stop? Im assuming that idle never goes above the 1500 stock stal limit or your car would be moving foreward or doing a burnout.

Re: High idle

Thanks for the info. I've heard of these sensors, I just need to connect them to the acronym. It did not happen when I accelerated, it was when I was coasting maybe about 1500. I just came back from driving the rs, and it didn't act up. And as far as burnouts... Me? Never! lol

BTW, do I need to take the sensors off to clean them?? Would injector cleaner in the tank help?

Re: High idle

I am about to tinker with these sensors. I had my engine stall in traffic about 150 miles away from home while waiting at a stop light. I thought I was screwed. I got it started finely, but I smelled gas, and it took a couple of tries to get it started. It acted like a flooded carb. I'd like to fix it myself, I'd just like to know what the heck I'm doing.

Oddly, that sounds like what happened to my RS 3 months ago, except in a different situation. I had just bought the car (It needed extreme help, but was driveable), and on our way home, it died several times while driving. After trying 5-7 times to get it started and keep it running, we drove it for awhile more....and when we came to a stop, the car died. And died. And died again. I also smelled gas, but couldn't figure out the problem.

However...I still don't know either what the problem was. It hasn't given me problems, primarily because I let it warm up before I drive it, so that it idles way too LOW, and then it doesn't give me any issues. I have to keep my foot on the gas when I come to a stop, though, or else it dies because it idles too low.

Re: High idle

My engine runs great most of the time. It didn't hicup until today, when It idled high and then died. I held the throddle down and it started again as if it were a flooded carb. I'll probably have to have some codes pulled. Did you ever have a diognostic dealy hooked to yours?

Re: High idle

o.k. your talking about your tbi car . first thing check ALL vacuum hoses , i spent a whole day changing mine . many trips back and forth to parts store for more new hose . i think i replaced about 20 ft. of hose , don't forget vacuum canister & cruise control . i then sprayed carb cleaner all over and into tbi unit . OMG ran great , picked 6pk up on the way home , worked for me . good luck .

Re: High idle

Hey Uncle Tom... Did you have intermittent trouble like I did? Also did you replace the vac lines that go to the heater/defrost ducts also? I'll do this if necessary, just not looking forward to the maze of lines, and hoses.
