Crossfire Injection Code 22 and Code 33

Crossfire Injection Code 22 and Code 33

My Check Engine Light just came on yesturday. I just got my KARR back from the shop after getting my motor mounts intalled

I have the dreaded Crossfire Injection. The CEL Code 22 and Code 33.

Code 22: Throttle Position Sensor/TPS voltage low

Code 33: Manifold Abosulte Pressure/MAP sensor too high

what could be wrong?

Hey man.

Check to make sure they reconnected all the wires and vacuum hoses.

"dreaded" Crossfire? Don't let the regular TBI guys get you down. All of the TBI cars, including the Crossfire, are very sensitive to vacuum leaks and proper operation and adjustment of the various sensors.

The code 22 should be an easy fix. You just need to adjust the position of the TPS sensor so the idle voltage reading is in spec. You want it as close to .525 volts as you can get it. The factory service manual says +- .25 volts is fine.

On the code 33, I would check to make sure that the vacuum line from the MAP sensor to the intake is connected and in good condition. If so, your MAP sensor may be bad. I don't remember any testing procedures in the services manual on testing MAP sensors.

Again, TBI cars like all sensors working and good vacuum lines. If you just started working on this particular car, I would replace ALL of the vacuum lines. I also recommend getting a factory service manual. Lots of really good info.

strangely when when I was checking for a vacuum leak Wednesday both codes went out and never came back with no clearing of the codes. I ran it for about five minutes.
but Thursday my car now has a backfire now.

The Map sensor is a 0-5V devise. with engine running and digital Vmeter attached I presume you should see the V change as you move the T linkage. idle may be like 2 V and WOT 5 V. As you move T that volts should change. If defective it may not move.

I think the sensor might be going bad

The attached pdf file has the service tests for Code 22 and 33 from the 1982 Camaro Service Manual. Print the file out, as tow of the pages were scanned upside down and follow all the instructions.

Hopefully this will help you resolve these two problems.

I have an 83 camaro with crossfire, rebuilt the engine and transmission, beautiful ride, I love my car! I haven't been able to hook up the EGR system so I have vacuum caps on all the posts on both throttle bodies. I am getting gas out the one that is supposed to go to the map sensor. Its confusing for me to figure out where to hook up to the map sensor, do you have any advice? Alot was done to the car before I got it and the EGR hook ups and MAP location are different than what the diagram shows. Any input would be helpful. The post I responded to from you tells me you know a good bit about these cars and how this works, can you help me? Cinnoman

You should start a new thread so everyone can take a look at your questions. gheatly has not been on line since April of this year, look him up in the member's lists. I would solve the gas problem first, as this is your main problem. Its not clear to me why gas would be comming out one of the vacuum ports, when the ports should be sucking air into the TB and intake manifold. Is the TB cracked? Have the TB been bored out to give the mixture chamber a large diameter? If so, I wonder if the wall is cracked so that fuel is seeping out there and going out the port

Start a new thread and post a few photos of your setup.

it was the MAP sensor and TPS they both were bad

My 1986 Firebird v8 has those 2 codes.
I'm trying to find what can cause these issues.
Code 22 tps error
Code 32 egr system failure (all hooked up, nothing visually damaged)
Code 33 map error
Code 36 maf sensor error

That may--or may not--be what's wrong with your car.

Connect a scan tool, see how those three sensors that are giving you codes, and the EGR responds.

The service manual has a diagnostic chart for each code. Be sure you follow that chart.

Common for the EGR valve diaphragm to be leaky and non-functional. Also common for the EGR passages to get plugged with carbon.
