Cowl Induction power gains?

I'm very excited to say that I just purchased a 3" Harwood Cowl Induction hood today! The hood is fully functional and I already have a Open Element K&N Filter w/ Extreme airflow lid (also Intake, Heads, Cam...still not tuned lol). Does anyone have an estimate as to how much of a horsepower increase can be had from a set-up like this on an L03???

Any increase would make me happy as I purchased it mainly for cosmetic purposes, but I was just curious to see what I should expect...

Re: Cowl Induction power gains?

you'd probably get more power out of a good tune than the hood, does the hood seal up to the air cleaner so that air only comes in the open part of the hood?

You should tune it and seal the air cleaner to the cowl. Do a search cause I found some guys using 3" foam and thin metal to make it work.

What air induction were you running before? I ran an open air element under a regular hood. I could not have had a worse set-up. I ran a bit with the hood off and could not believe the gains.

I was about to build a cowl inductions after I bought a new hood, but I turned around and sold it due to priorities.

Seal it. Tune it. Have fun.

Yeah, I know, I really need to get it tuned. That is the next big project! I too was just running an open element filter with stock hood. I know it wasn't a very good set-up, but I did it more for cosmetic reasons than anything.

The hood did not come with any seals, but my dad and me are gonna get creative and conjure up some sealing method to get all the cold air in the airbox!

Cowls only work (that is increased pressure) at high speed. Also, I'm surprised your car is running worth a damn with mods like that and no tune.

Ha, nice call! It's not running too good at all. I put the cam in the summer before the heads and it actually didn't run too bad. I was questioning some of the "cam=tune" talk I had read on here.

Well, the very next summer (2 years ago) the heads went on and it has run like garbage ever since. I was just confused why it happend after the heads and not the cam. I just talked to a guy who is a hardcore engine guru and he said this was because the heads actually allowed the cam to work like it should.

The cam I put in has a lift of 480, 487 so it probably wasn't even getting the valves all the way open due to the clearance limitations of the swirl ports. Oh yeah, after the heads I also had a nasty little vacuum problem too, or shall I say, lack thereof lol

Bogging engine, no brakes....at least I have a sweet hood FTW!!!!!!

Haha- I know it may sound crazy, but it really didn't run that bad. No coughing, sputtering or bogging until I put the heads on.

Re: Cowl Induction power gains?

What cam and heads are you running??? There's a lot of considerations on a camshaft besides just the lift that determine whether or not you have the correct cam for your application.....
