305 TBI question.

Ok, done a search and checked the stickies up top but never could find a real clear cut answer to my question. So here it goes, I have a 305 TBI in a 1989 RS. I plan on doing the basic TBI mods, such as the air filter, and the mods to the TBI it self. But I was wondering with a LT1 cam and headers and exhaust as well, will I need a custom chip for it to run correctly.

Also I would like to say I am not building a performace car, just something that performs better once I get it rebuilt. Yeah heard the 350 arguement before, but I have two 305's laying around and it is just cheaper to rebuild one of those than buying a 350 and rebuilding it.

So Would I need a chip for just the LT1 cam? How about an intake manifold and the LT1 cam? Both including the TBI mods and exhaust.

Re: 305 TBI question.

yea to get the most out of it and for it to run right doing those mods you would need a new chip. good to see im not the only one who wants to keep the 305

Re: 305 TBI question.

Yes the LT1 cam requires a tune and more fuel delivery @ higher rpm's, other wise it will be slower then now.
The ultimate tbi mods grinding is not noticeble at this point and dosent require any tune. Basically the same for the air cleaner; depending on regional themperatures something like the open element may kill some grunt in hot weather and hard driving conditions. A free flowing cold air intake will help make a little more power in hot weather and driving hard.

Re: 305 TBI question.

Ok thanks for the info, but I have heard that sometimes the chips you get can be bad or tuned wronged or not tuned correctly. So was wondering if this happens with the TBIchips err chips. Is this true?

Also I plan on cold air, since the summers here do get rather hot, and plan to make the dual snorkel air cleaner to do this.

After you do all the mods, you should data log before and after you get the chip. If it needs to be redone, you have something to go by. Unless you get the equipment to tune yourself. Ya it would be a lot to learn but may be worth it, especially when you want to do more.

Re: 305 TBI question.

So I would have to upgrade the heads if I change to the LT1 cam? Hmm and this EBL sounds rather easy to do, just need a lap top to hook up to it and you are ready to tune it?

Re: 305 TBI question.

EBL will adjust your VE tables for you and created a corrected .bin. that you Flash into EBL-ECU. Depending on the mods you do some things will need to be done like AE pumpshot which is in datalogs but not "learned".
And yes you will need to tune for cam. You could drop cam in and see how it goes. But unlikely you will be pleased with how car behaves.

Re: 305 TBI question.

Bu you can tune via the datalogs like this just via a lap top, rather than burning chips and such?

Re: 305 TBI question.

options.

Datalog and review logs.

Create a corrected .bin from that datalog later.

Or datalog and create a corrected .bin same time.

Save that .bin or when datalog and bin complete flash bin into ECU. No chips to deal with.

there are of course lower cost datalogging/tuning options available. see dynamicefi.com site for more info on EBL. Also see craigmoates site for other options that may be lesser cost but not as convenient.
