Vortec head swap questions

Hey guys, getting ready on swapping my 355 w/ Vortec heads into my car this Fall and had a couple questions:

1. I will be going with a 454 TBI and using a square bore intake. I will need an adapter plate, the question is do I get a front mount or rear mount adapter plate? (I have not been able to find a center mount BB adapter plate btw.) Will be using this intake: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PFS-52028/

2. What do I do about the TV cable bracket? Can I just modify the stock one to fit the Vortec intake by boring the holes out and doing a bit of bending? I am worried about TV cable geometry. This is also why I am wanting to know which adapter to go with.

Was hoping to order my intake and adapter plate next week, then I can do a mock up on the engine stand. Thanks.

Re: Vortec head swap questions

last time i had checked, i believe the holley one can be done either way (bolt provisions for front or rear). i've got one in the toolbox not being used, so i can double check for ya.

as for the geometry, i'll have to leave that to someone else

Do yourself a favor and check out dctrumpet's store, he is also member here and drives TBI.

Re: Vortec head swap questions

ok, finally dug out the plate I previously used

as you can see, provisions for both square and spread bore intake bolt patterns and 2 sets of install holes for the tb (one set's got studs in them to block vacuum leaks, but they're just in place with blue loctite).

think it may be of use for your setup?

Re: Vortec head swap questions

new here, just picked up a 92 rs 305, i plan to put a 350 in it over the winter and was just wondering, is it possible just to take a complete vortec motor and heads and swap them into my tbi? i understand that you have to buy or make an adapter to swap it, but thats all that needs to be done to switch to vortec? i have not picked up a motor yet, not sure what i wanna do, would like to put a vortec in it... i think, and the other thing is i believe its a 4l60 but keeping it tbi and chipping it for 350 that would be ok also? my brother is going to rebuild the tranny and shift kit and stall in it.

and another thing can i put vortec heads on a carb or tbi motor? just change the intake? nothing to do with the cam or anything like that? im sorry to sound like i dont know much but lets face it... i dont

1. Read all the Sticky Treads on top of the forum. The "BUDGET TBI BUILDUP" tread answers all your question.

2. Do not start new topics in other peoples treads.

I thought all dual-plane intakes were heated...

Re: Vortec head swap questions

How can you tell? Is it because of the coolant ports at each corner?

No coolant circulates around the runners and plenum.

Re: Vortec head swap questions

What would be a good intake to run? I currently have the GMPP Vortec/TBI intake, but from what I have read it is really only good for a stock engine. It also would have to be bored out to accept the 454 TBI. I am currently hoping to put 300HP to the wheels. I really would like an intake that has a coolant port on the rear-passenger side, which alot of them do not seem to have.

Re: Vortec head swap questions

The GMPP TBI intake should be ok for 300rwhp.

Re: Vortec head swap questions

I was talking Brian at TBIchips and he said that the intake would restrict power some. He recommended going with the Edlebrock RPM intake, but isn't that one not heated as well? I'm thinking I might just keep the GMPP intake and upgrade to something else in the future. I am actually wanting/planning to go to a MPFI setup in the future anyway, it is just way out of my price range ATM. Does anyone have flow #'s for the GMPP intake? I can't find any.

I think the standard RPM intake is heated. What you need to stay away from is the RPM Airgap manifold when using TBI.

Not a bad idea. You can always upgrade later and you could sell that intake to pay for another pretty easily.

Re: Vortec head swap questions

I am actually trying to sell the GMPP intake ATM, but no takers. Maybe it's cause I'm in Canada or am asking to much ($300 OBO)...
